L’auteur, professeur de marqueterie à l’école Boulle et docteur en histoire de l’art, nous décrit la vie et l’œuvre de cet ébéniste d’exception avec le regard combiné d’un artisan et d’un historien.

André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) était déjà à 30 ans considéré comme « le plus habile ébéniste de Paris » (Colbert). Il fut le seul artisan de sa génération à réunir plusieurs savoir-faire qui tous participaient à la beauté des objets qu’il fabriquait. Son nom est en effet associé à ses talents de marqueteur, lui qui avait développé l’art de recouvrir les meubles d’écaille de tortue et de métal (laiton, étain ou cuivre), procédé qui prit le nom de marqueterie Boulle. Il était également un virtuose de la « peinture en bois », une technique associant diverses essences pour former bouquets, rinceaux, guirlandes et arabesques. Il fut aussi dessinateur, tabletier, menuisier et il maîtrisait l’art du bronze : il dirigea finalement son propre atelier de fabrication des bronzes où il sculptait parfois ses modèles et pratiquait la ciselure et la dorure.

Il nous laissa des meubles magnifiques, mais aussi de plus petits objets : écritoires, consoles, horloges, coffrets et de nombreux dessins manuscrits ou gravés que l’auteur se fait un plaisir de présenter à travers de nombreuses photographies et de commenter en précisant leur histoire, les techniques utilisées, les essences et matières mises en oeuvre. À l’occasion il les accompagne de leur relevé, et pour mieux rendre compte des nombreux détails, certains dessins de grandes dimensions sont présentés sur des planches dépliantes.

Le livre commence par un rappel des techniques de marqueterie utilisées par Boulle : le dessin, les matériaux, le découpage et ses outils, la partie et la contre-partie, la marqueterie de bois (ou peinture en bois), la gravure. Il raconte ensuite la vie de l’ébéniste, précise son contexte historique dans le Paris des artisans au XVIIe siècle, sa famille avec Jean Bolt, son père déjà menuisier en ébène, sa jeunesse, sa rapide ascension dans l’artisanat jusqu’à être logé pendant 60 ans au Louvre par le roi qui l’a ainsi placé au-dessus des règlements corporatifs. L’auteur nous rappelle que l’homme était aussi un fou de peinture et collectionneur passionné, ce qui le faisait toujours vivre avec des créanciers à sa porte et le fera même tâter de la prison pour dettes.
Le texte est émaillé de nombreuses photographies accompagnées de descriptions d’ouvrages de Boulle sans oublier ceux de certains ébénistes contemporains qui l’ont influencé ou au contraire suivi, et de certains meubles plus tardifs qui montrent des panneaux de marqueterie du Maître réemployés par d’autres. Le livre se termine par un reportage dans un atelier parisien qui a récemment effectué dans les règles de l’art la copie d’une armoire de Boulle.

Deux doreurs de l’atelier de restauration du Château de Versailles ont écrit ce livre technique abondamment illustré. C’est dire s’ils sont à même de transmettre au lecteur les procédés de leur métier en s’appuyant sur un grand nombre d’objets exceptionnels, que ce soit des meubles et des cadres, mais aussi des boiseries, des stucs et même les ornements des toits. Ainsi, il ne s’agit pas ici  uniquement d’un livre sur la dorure sur bois, mais bien un ouvrage de référence sur toutes les techniques du métier de doreur.

Après quelques réflexions sur la manière d’exercer leur profession dans le cadre du Château, les auteurs passent en revue les produits et outils utilisés. Pour ne rien laisser dans l’ombre, ils n’hésitent pas à faire des reportages chez le dernier batteur d’or de France (la maison Dauvet, active depuis 1764) ou chez un fabricant d’outils de doreurs (les fers à reparer de la maison Da Silva).

Les techniques de dorure sont ensuite longuement décrites, et d’innombrables photographies montrent les gestes et procédés utilisés par les professionnels. La dorure à la détrempe (dite aussi à dorure à l’eau ou dorure à l’assiette), la plus belle car susceptible d’un brillant incomparable, est détaillée dans ses 18 étapes. La dorure à la mixion (ou dorure à l’huile), qui est à Versailles surtout utilisée en extérieur, est ensuite expliquée. Les jeux de fonds et les autres techniques de dorure (à la grecque, sur papier, sur plâtre, sur verre, avec feuilles adhérentes) sont également exposées.

Une vingtaine de chefs-d’œuvre que renferment les collections du Château et qui ont été restaurées par l’atelier de dorure sont ensuite examinés et les interventions décrites avec une illustration riche de détails. Certaines salles ornées de boiseries sculptées et dorées sont prétexte à de magnifiques photographies illustrant le travail des doreurs d’hier et d’aujourd’hui. Les dernières pages traitent de la peinture décorative (faux marbre et faux bois) souvent associée à la dorure. Le livre se termine sur un glossaire, les notices  biographiques des artisans cités, une liste de sites Internet, de fournisseurs et d’ouvrages spécialisés.

Chair Anatomy reveals in photos and illustrations the form and the construction details – the anatomy – of a selection of nearly sixty chairs chosen from the last 160 years of modern chair design. James Orrom is Professor for Product and Furniture Design at the Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences in Germany. He co-founded Umlauf & Orrom Studio for Industrial Design in 1987, producing furniture, film equipment, porcelain, glassware and other products for such international clients as BMW, Siemens and Villeroy & Boch.

Magnificent monograph celebrating the one-hundredth birthday of the great Danish designer

The name Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is inseparable from his unrivalled chairs, which helped Danish design to achieve its international breakthrough. Every design fan has his or her favorite from among Wegner’s approximately five hundred creations. Today, there is hardly a glossy interior design magazine that does not include an illustration of the elegant China Chair (1943) or the Y Chair (1950), and even John F. Kennedy sat on his Round Chair, which is now simply called The Chair (1949). Trained as a furniture maker, Wegner usually made his prototypes himself by hand, using traditional joinery techniques such as tongue-and-groove or finger joints. In the process he pushed the limitations of wood, giving his designs an unmatched elegance. His sense of humor did not fall by the wayside, either, as evidenced by his splendid Peacock Chair (1947) or the masculine Ox Chair (1960), that latter of which is available with or without horns.
