Retail merchandising is not just about garments hanging on a rail in isolation or displaying items on shelves

Leading fashion retailers and luxury lifestyle stores now rely heavily on conceptual interior and space design to reflect the whole image and philosophy of their label or brand, not just to showcase their collections. The connection between store space and product is organic one defines and enhances the other. Curated focuses on the current minimalist, gallery/store trend in commercial design and decoration, and its increasing presence in new shopping spaces.

Contemporary boutiques, bookshops, bars and concept stores now seek to create a unique environment where innovative minimal design, art, lighting, styling and music are as much of an integral part of the shopping experience as the merchandise itself. The traditional retail store has now involved into an evolving platform of meticulously curated ideas, where limited edition pieces sit elegantly beside bespoke-designed furniture like gallery installations. Abstract art pieces and objects are juxtaposed with clothes, interacting in a seamless aesthetic harmony.

Curated offers a visual journey of contemporary design and explores the close affinity between fashion and art in a modern, utilitarian minimalist setting. An exquisite visual reference book of some of the most cutting-edge in-store spaces across the globe, this book presents innovative retailing ideas and minimalist inspirations from the hottest international design studios such as the conceptual Phillip 3.1 store in Seoul, Camper in London, Issey Miyake in Shibuya, Swarovski in Ginza, Merci Pop-up store, Aesop in Singapore, the uber-minimalist Muji in Milan and so much more. Here visual merchandising is taken to a whole new level, elevating the products into objects of beauty and works of art and blurring the boundaries between fashion and design.

This work features information and interviews with the designers, technical drawing plans as well as an explanation of the concept and creative process and personal vision behind the design of each space.

Retail design is quickly learning new ways to entice the customer. To create a unique and captivating shopping experience, shops use interactive technology and commission stunning works of art; fashion brands team up with celebrity architects to create brand strategies and generate publicity; and irony, humor, and playful elements of surprise turn into mainstays of retail interiors. From the giant, breathing mannequins of Mandarina Duck in London to the high-tech dressing rooms of Prada in Los Angeles, Design for Shopping provides a detailed, behind-the-scenes examination of the sometimes jaw-dropping, sometimes whimsical, and always breathtakingly creative ways that today’s most exceptional shops appeal to the customer’s imagination.

Accompanied by architects’ floor plans and vivid color photographs, Design for Shopping showcases a comprehensive selection of recent retail interiors from around the world. Following an insightful introduction which examines the historical and sociological variables in current shopping culture, the book is divided into seven chapters which discuss themes such as the reinvention of old brands; technology and shopping; the emerging intersections between architecture, art, and fashion; play and shopping; new ways and places to shop; and how store design and branding have become intimately related to selling a lifestyle. Fascinating case studies illustrate each of these themes, with thirty-five stores discussed in total. As a special feature, each chapter begins with an interview with a prominent figure in the world of retail design. Designers, architects, and retailers interviewed include Marcel Wanders, Hani Rashid, Amanda Levete, and Terence Conran. The perceptive text, coupled with the gorgeous illustrations of the stores (shops presented include Gucci, New York; Helmut Lang, New York; Prada, Los Angeles; Armani, Hong Kong; Dior, Tokyo; Mandarina Duck, London; Fendi, Paris; Miss Sixty, Barcelona; Villa Moda, Kuwait City) makes this book a must-have for anyone interested in design, architecture, shopping, or culture.

Good retail design must attract and keep customers, support a brand or store’s image, showcase the product, and work as a functional shopping environment. This book features 44 of the best recent examples of retail design from around the world and examines the details within the larger decorative schemes.

In the 21st Century when choice is taken for granted, consumers demand creative and unique shopping venues. For savvy fashion boutique owners, it’s ‘experience design’ or concept design that makes the difference between success and failure.

The examples presented in Fashion Décor reveal the passion and innovation of designers in every detail — from a store logo constructed from a cascade of hanging crystals to an abstract tree sculpted out of plastic pipes, all are intended to awe and attract customers.

Included are the Camper Shop and Diesel Denim Gallery, plus a host of other masterful projects created for Marni, Stussy, Alberto Ferretti, Issey Miyake, Swarovski and Nike. Featured contributors include international architecture and design giants such as Pentagram (UK), Tokuijin Yoshioka Design (Japan), Universal Design Studio (UK/Australia), Marcel Wanders (Netherlands), and Studio Arthur Casas (Brazil). All are accompanied by detailed floor plans.
