The Baltic Sea has gained rapidly in importance as a travel destination in recent years. More and more people appreciate the diversity found among urban designer hubs, sleepy and cozy villages, and ever-changing coastal strips. The new volume in the series on design retreats shows destinations away from mass tourism with a focus around the Great Belt.

Both an architectural and a travel guide, this volume offers inspiration and promises to fulfill the longing for peace, solitude and variety – for holidays spent at a farmstead on the dyke, above the sea on a crane, or in a fancy loft in Copenhagen. The common denominators among all accommodations presented here are a convincing design and a special location by the Baltic Sea.

The "Where Architects Stay"- Series heads towards the Water: Stylish vacation accommodations in the Baltic Sea region where architects would stay themselves when traveling.

Every generation an extraordinary figure captures the imagination of the design public, allowing us to dream and see what is heretofore impossible. That man of the moment is Alan Faena.

Raised in the restrictive regimes of 1960s Argentina, Alan Faena came of age when the country opened up to the West and Alan transformed himself into the icon of this new spirit, first as the founder of a popular Argentine fashion company, then as the hotelier of the highly sought-after FAENA hotels, in Buenos Aires and Miami. The results are immersive dream places, full of color, life, and high design.

In this revealing memoir, profusely illustrated with images of the hotels and Alan's private homes and retreats as well as his famous and beautiful friends, Alan Faena details how his ambition to create beauty was realized with gorgeous interiors and restaurants, lavish gardens and pools, and the very best that can be dreamt of.

Celebrate 100 years and explore the stories behind the iconic Copacabana Palace, A Belmond Hotel, Rio de Janeiro — its cinematic views, star–studded guests, legendary parties, and carnival chic.

This sumptuous book tells the legendary story of Copacabana Palace Hotel, A Belmond Hotel, Rio de Janeiro, from its extraordinary beginnings to the contemporary and stylish destination that it is today. Themed chapters and exquisite photography explore how the hotel has been a part of Rio de Janeiro life for 100 years — from its opening in 1923, when there were few other buildings in the area, to the golden age of Hollywood glamour, the extraordinary free concert on Copacabana Beach given by the Rolling Stones in 2006 (with more than 1.5 million people attending), and beyond. Affectionately dubbed “the Copa” by cariocas (locals) and guests alike, the hotel is famous for events such as the Carnival balls in February and the celebrations at New Year’s Eve, when everyone flocks to Copacabana Beach. Events and stories such as these are featured in this stylish book, which also includes specially commissioned photography that reveals the hotel’s stunning cinematic views, magnificent design, and extraordinary guests. Protecting human beings has always been one of the most genuine purposes of architecture. Due to the increase in global warming in recent years, protection from the sun is becoming one of its most important functions. This challenge has resulted in numerous trendsetting technological innovations and amazing design concepts, which have been collected in this book. Shade is mainly created in three ways: while opaque constructions block off all light, perforated devices as well as translucent materials reduce the exposure to light.

Creating Shade presents all conceivable types and forms of shade-providing design made of a host of different materials such as wood, fabrics, concrete, and a great number of synthetic materials. The collection includes elegant pergolas, extravagant pavilions, and roofed piazzas, as well as a fascinating solution for a canopy over a Roman excavation site and the spectacular Metropol Parasol in Seville. Outstanding serial products are presented along with individually constructed creations.

This monograph dedicated to the most spectacular example of Parisian First Empire interior architecture retraces the history of the building and the lives of its residents.

The Hôtel de Beauharnais, constructed in 1713, gained renown during the Consulate period. In 1803, Josephine Bonaparte acquired the property for her son, Eugène de Beauharnais, and had the building renovated and decorated at great expense. At the fall of the Napoleonic Empire, it was sold to the King of Prussia and became an embassy during the nineteenth century. With its unique Consulate and Empire décor, the palace is an invaluable specimen of Parisian interior architecture.

The result of more than ten years of research and restoration work, this book recounts three centuries of European political history through the lives of the Hôtel’s successive owners.
