This richly illustrated monograph tells the comprehensive inside story of one of the greatest architecture achievements in the history of Oklahoma City, and the state's tallest building: the Devon Energy Center. The story begins with the project's origins in Oklahoma City's need for community redevelopment and a desire for corporate growth, through its elegant and collaborative design process, to its complex construction and realization. Intended for everyone interested in the development of landmark structures and 21st-century skyscrapers, the book is both technical and highly visual, including an impressive collection of the concept and architectural drawings and models by Pickard Chilton, the project's Design Architect. Each expertly crafted component of this complex development including its heaven-piercing tower, its glass rotunda, the free-standing Devon Auditorium, the 50th-story restaurant, Devon Gardens, and its exquisite palette of materials are discussed and featured. The monograph concludes with a visual essay of beautiful photographs of the completed project, captured by some of the country's premiere architectural photographers.

Authored by architecture critic Michael J. Crosbie, the narrative takes the reader through the Center's complex history, addressing the project's grand urban design and its vital impact on the civic, social, and urban fabric of the city. Dr. Crosbie also relates tales and insights gained from interviews of the project's many collaborators: Devon Energy, developers, and the many architecture, design, engineering, and construction professionals. The text reveals the project as both an immense collaborative effort and as a singular vision of the philanthropic Devon Executive Chairman, Larry Nichols.

For many, ecoskyscrapers are synonymous with Ken Yeang. In more than three decades of practice, Ken Yeang has almost single-handedly pioneered and developed this building genre.

This book presents Ken Yeang's work on the design of ecologically responsive skyscrapers, and includes his essay on applying green-design principles to the skyscraper typology, as well as a preface by Steve Featherstone, an introduction by David Scott (Chairman of The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) and a critique by Professor Ivor Richards.

Ken Yeang makes it clear at the outset that the skyscraper building type is probably the most ecologically unfriendly of all building types, but states that until an economically viable alternative is identified, it is necessary to make them as humane and as sustainable as possible. Each project is presented together with data on its climatic location, the local vegetation, plot ratio, net and gross areas. The book is invaluable to those seeking to design green skyscrapers.

The facade is the visible surface of the building shell. It separates the interior from the exterior, form from function, users from passers-by. In addition to functional demands, the surrounding urban space and aesthetic appeal, sustainability parameters are gaining in importance in this day and age. For this reason, facade design, construction and technology receive ever-increasing attention in the building industry today.

This volume provides an overview of the extensive range of possibilities, featuring the great creative and technical variety of today's facades. The presentation focuses on revealing photos, technical specifications, and detailed drawings. The projects from around the world vividly exemplify how the relationship between the interior and exterior is defined, designed and implemented in each individual case.

High-rise architecture has provided some of the most technically innovative and aesthetically interesting buildings of recent years, despite its checkered and often controversial history. It has also become some of the most desirable property available in cities throughout the world.

Andrew Weaving hands you the entrance keys to twenty-five different apartments-with-a-view in this rich collection of fabulous, spare photographs that capture unique views of these buildings and their highly livable interiors. High-rise Living features architecture and interior living spaces for high-rise condominiums and apartments in Europe, Asia, Canada, Australia, and the United States, divided in three categories: Classic, Now, and Future.

An engaging introduction recounts the highlights of high-rise architecture from its genesis in "ideal socialist cities" to its contemporary ideal as a solution to environmental and world population housing issues, and covers the work of such architectural greats as Louis Sullivan, Auguste Perret, Frank Lloyd Wright (yes, he did towers!), Le Corbusier, Richard Neutra, Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Erno Goldfinger, Bertrand Goldberg, I. M. Pei, the Archigram Group, Kisho Kurokawa, and others.

High-rise Living is a fresh look at modern, architecturally designed spaces in which to live, right in the heart of the city.

The most highly publicized building renewal process in the world today-and the most significant survey of competing architecture designs since the international design competition for the Chicago Tribune Tower in 1922-is for the reconstruction of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. It has inspired a multitude of designs and has engaged architects on a global scale in the re-imagining of the vacant 16-acre site.

Published in conjunction with Architectural Record, the most important architecture journal in the United States, Imagining Ground Zero documents not only the various competitions sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation but also the informal proposals sponsored by the New York Times, New York Magazine, and the exhibition at Max Protetch Gallery, as well as a selection from thousands of schemes submitted independently for the World Trade Center site and Memorial.

Among the key figures in contemporary architecture whose work is featured here are Coop Himmelblau, Peter Eisenman, Norman Foster, Charles Gwathmey, Zaha Hadid, Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, Steven Holl, Rem Koolhaas, Greg Lynn, Richard Meier, Eric Owen Moss, David Rockwell, Lindy Roy, Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos, Rafael Viñoly, and many others. With its exhaustive approach to these myriad voices in the discourse surrounding the World Trade Center site, Imagining Ground Zero is destined to become the canonical reference for this unprecedented event in world architecture.

The Asian boom of the last decade created an unprecedented arena for architectural adventure and experimentation, an environment in which Andrew Bromberg immersed himself and thrived. Aedas was at the epicenter of this ferment, in part due to its significant presence in Hong Kong preceding the boom, and then in large part due to the furious energy and passion that Bromberg brought to the firm when he joined in 2002.

New Architecture in the Emerging World chronicles the diverse range of projects designed by Andrew Bromberg for Aedas between 2002 and 2010. It highlights the exceptional design versatility and ingenuity Bromberg displayed in order to address Asia’s extremely varied clients, sites, architectural programmes, schedules and cultural parameters.

In tracing the intertwined fortunes of Bromberg, Aedas and the Asian continent at a time when the world’s economic centre of gravity appeared, at least for a while, to have permanently tilted to the east, New Architecture in the Emerging World provides an unparalleled survey of the phantasmagorical experience it turned out to be.

Roof gardens are enjoying a revival. Landscape architects are now being followed by architects, project developers and owners of roof terraces in discovering the advantages of plants on the roof. In each of these locations, designers took up the challenge of the building, the urban environment above the roof-line or the landscape. Each spot is so different that it had to look for a new definition of the roof garden or roof terrace. They have come up with new architectural concepts using water, stone, wood, metal, glass, trees, plants and grass, created new green spaces or achieved astonishing effects up on the roof.

Created for students and professionals to inspire changes in how new buildings are designed and constructed, the Self-Sufficient competition challenged participants to design a self-sufficient and ecologically oriented dwelling. In the early 20th century, the concept of “dwelling” was defined as a “machine for living”, a reference to a new way of understanding the construction of inhabitable spaces that characterized the Machine Age. Today, a century later, we face the challenge of constructing a sustainable or self-sufficient dwelling, a living organism that interacts with its environment, exchanging resources, and which functions as an entirely independent entity. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has collected a selection of entries presented during its 1st Advanced Architecture Contest: Self-Sufficient Housing.

There are many books about tall buildings, but few focus exclusively on residential high-rises. Perhaps this is because they are traditionally not as high as commercial high-rises. However, this is no longer the case; not only do many now compare with other high-rise buildings when it comes to height, but a building designed for living is particularly interesting in that it conveys a sense of the purpose and function of the building. Sky High Living explores a selection of the most arresting residential tall buildings from around the world, predominantly from North America and Asia. Compiled by Georges Binder, building and data expert on high-rise design.
