Alastair Duncan, the world-renowned authority on Louis C. Tiffany, has produced the definitive work on America's premier artist-designer, examining every facet of Tiffany's unrivalled achievements in a lifetime consecrated, in his own words, to 'The Quest of Beauty'. As Tiffany's wares have continued to rise in popularity since their resurgence in the market-place in the 1950s, many collectors have focused solely on lamps, others on glassware, while others again have assembled collections encompassing several Tiffany disciplines, for example, a handful of lamps, vases, fancy goods, and a window or painting or two. Only Takeo Horiuchi, however, has set out to build a comprehensive collection that incorporates masterworks in each and every artistic discipline to which Tiffany applied himself: Paintings, Furniture, Windows, Mosaics, Art Glass, Lamps, Fancy Goods, Metalware, Enamelware, Silver, Pottery and Jewellery. This book, based on the superlative Louis C. Tiffany Garden Museum Collection formed by Mr. Horiuchi, presents a unique overview of every aspect of Tiffany's talent. For the first time it is possible to see, gathered together 'under one roof', the range of Louis C. Tiffany's creativity - from his famous lamps and windows to his lesser-known paintings and furniture. Every piece in the collection is reproduced in colour, often complemented by extracts from contemporary art revues and the Tiffany firm's sales catalogues, advertisements and price lists, while photographs show them in their original domestic settings, or in the firm's showrooms or international expositions at which they made their debuts. Tiffany's workshops are also illustrated, as well as the logbook entries of its artisans and annotated sketches of its designers. This wealth of illustrative material is accompanied by Alastair Duncan's detailed and evocative descriptions of the workshops, materials, manufacturing processes, the rich and famous who patronised Tiffany, their commissions, and the colourful personalities of the team of artist-craftsmen with whom Tiffany surrounded himself. This book provides a beautiful and comprehensive picture of every artistic discipline to which Tiffany applied himself, a true testament to his extraordinary talent.

The very first comprehensive work on Louis-Philippe furniture, this book surveys the most important furniture types, stylistic features, woods, mounts and fittings and cloth upholstery. Establishes definitive diagnostic criteria for precisely distinguishing between the commonly used terms ‘Second Rococo/Rococo Revival’ and ‘Louis-Philippe’.

During the years between 1850 and 1870 furniture was made throughout Europe which borrowed stylistically from Rococo forms. Between the Biedermeier era and the subsequent period, during which industrialism took hold in Germany, the Louis-Philippe style (named after the king who headed the middle-class against the restored French monarchy to found the July Monarchy) developed a formal idiom distinctively its own within Historicism.

Louise Bourgeois, who has produced art since the 1930s, began in the 1990s to use her clothes and the clothes of her loved ones as components in her sculptures and drawings. It is as much a reincarnation of her past and her childhood as a confirmation of her relationship with memory. Her visual approach to fabrics transforms decorative accessories into emotional and personal references which, especially in her Cells and later in her drawings, create representations of a tormented and at the same time powerful womanhood. Further development of the artist’s work began in 2002: exploiting the iridescent colours and formal structural properties of pieces of her clothing, she created “The Fabric Drawings,” astonishing works alternating between floral figurative pieces and chromatic abstractions.

This set of images is collected here in its entirety for the first time, constituting the closest thing yet to a general catalogue.

• This collection of pictorial and sculptural images is brought together in this anthology in a unique and exhaustive way.
• The publication is a means of approaching her distinctive iconographic and visual explosions and adding to our knowledge of the artist herself.
• Bourgeois’s emotional and figurative strength, translated into compositions of colour and form, is further testimony to her important contribution to the history of modern and contemporary art.

Lee Alexander McQueen (1969–2010), whose design combined visionary aesthetics, emotional power, and extraordinary craft, was known for staging provocative shows that were as much performances as venues to display his couture creations. Charged with energy, informed by history and culture, and filled with fresh concepts, McQueen’s shows have become legends not only of fashion but also of art. Anne Deniau was the only photographer allowed backstage by McQueen for 13 years, beginning in September 1997 and ending with the final show in March 2010. She captured McQueen working with his close circle of collaborators - including designer Sarah Burton, milliner Philip Treacy, jewelry designer Shaun Leane, and model Kate Moss - to create his meticulously produced spectacles. Her book offers an inspiring homage, through the art of photography, to the work of a great artist.

Thanks to its exquisite pictorial material, this book familiarizes the reader with the logic and golden rules of art. It enables an understanding, on the one hand, of the keys to appreciating the works of the great masters, and on the other, of how to apply these rules to the practice of one's own creative activities.

The work begins with a number of basic explanations on how to represent and interrelate the different parts of the human body. The introduction is followed by chapters on the various possibilities for representing male and female nudes, and mythological and biblical figures, dressed and contextualized. Finally, it looks at quadruped animals and birds.

No more boring lamps and lights!

The effect of light cannot be overestimated. The most splendid interior will not shine without adequate lighting.

In the last few years, a new school of lamp designers and light manufacturers have taken the lead in creating and developing a new frontier of domestic lighting. These innovative solutions reflect the cutting-edge of contemporary furniture design, interior design, and architecture as much as a recent quantum leap in illumination technology. Lux offers an inspiring range of these current approaches to lamps and lighting that represent a fundamental change in the aesthetic and technical possibilities available.

Many countries around the world have already banned or are in the process of phasing out traditional incandescent light bulbs in favor of more energy-efficient lighting. Because these familiar sources of illumination are becoming extinct, the areas of lighting and light design are currently experiencing significant changes. New technologies such as LEDs and OLEDs are inspiring both designers and manufacturers to develop new forms, functionalities, structures, and constructions.

Lux describes and documents this current evolution in lighting and light design. The book presents an eclectic collection of up-to-the-minute light-related projects, focusing on their impact on areas such as product design, technology, and art. Because existing lamp forms and silhouettes often serve as the basis for cutting-edge work or are being integrated into new technologies and aesthetics in a playful way, Lux features innovative and surprising ideas for chandeliers and classic table, wall, and hanging lamps.

The book shows how recently developed light sources that radiate less heat can be combined with a far broader spectrum of materials than we have ever seen before. It also presents examples of experimental installations with light as well as ways in which illumination is being used to enhance an atmosphere, create objects, or structure space.

In short, Lux features an inspiring range of current approaches to the use of light that represent a fundamental change in the technical and aesthetic possibilities available.

Illusions in Your Hands. Craft M.C. Escher’s visual riddles in 3D!

Mysterious and mathematical at once, the magical visual world of Dutch artist M.C. Escher (1898–1972) has captivated scientists and scholars and made its mark on popular culture, inspiring book covers, album art, films, posters, and puzzles.

This set puts Escher’s tessellated wonders right at your fingertips with 17 easy-to-assemble paper sculptures. Folding along the score lines, you can transform the artist’s richly geometric designs into three-dimensional polyhedra with forming and reforming patterns, including genius arrangements of flowers, butterflies, lizards, and seashells. The book includes a review of the geometric principles and artistic invention underlying Escher’s optical marvels as well as concise instructions.

The authors:

Wallace G. Walker spent most of his career as an independent artist residing in New York City. He was a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and the inventor of IsoAxis®. He worked for I.M. Pei and Partners and taught at both Parsons School of Design and the New York Institute of Technology. He had numerous shows and exhibits in cities across the USA. He returned to his hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana in 1989 and continued his artistic activities until his death in 2003.

Doris Schattschneider is Professor Emerita of Mathematics at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where she taught for 34 years. Her dual interest in geometry and art led naturally to the study of M.C. Escher’s work. Active as a teacher, lecturer, editor, and writer, she has published widely on Escher’s work. Her book M.C. Escher: Visions of Symmetry gives a complete account of Escher’s symmetry work, and includes color photographs of all 150 of Escher’s symmetry drawings.

The author deals with one powerful motif in Escher's work - the puzzlelike interlocking of birds, fish and other natural forms in continuous patterns. His methods are examined through a meticulous analysis of his notebooks and an epilogue reveals new information about Escher's inspiration.

Glasgow Style: The life and work of Glasgow School pioneer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Scottish architect, designer, and painter Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 - 1928) was one of the earliest pioneers of modern architecture and design. While he never received major recognition in his hometown of Glasgow, his bold new blend of simplicity and poetic details inspired modernists across Europe.

Mackintosh s avant-garde approach embraced a variety of media as well as fresh stylistic devices. His multi-faceted oeuvre incorporated architecture, furniture, graphic design, landscapes, and flower studies. He embraced strong lines, elegant proportions, and natural motifs, combining a healthy dose of japonisme with a modernist sensibility for function. He preferred bold black typography, restrained shapes, and tall, generous windows suffusing rooms with light.

Mackintosh's projects in Glasgow include the famous Willow Tearooms, the private residences Windyhill and The Hill House, and the Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Art, widely considered his masterwork. Much of his work was collaborative practice with his wife, fellow artist Margaret Macdonald. The couple made up half of the loose Glasgow collective known as The Four; the other two were Margaret's sister, Frances, and her husband, Herbert MacNair.

On the continent, this Glasgow Style was met with delight. In Italy, Germany, and, in particular, Austria, artists of the Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau drew much from its rectilinear, yet lyrical, forms. In this introductory book, we take in Mackintosh's practice across art, architecture, and design to explore his particular combination of the statuesque and sensual and its vital influence on modernist expression across Europe.

About the series:

Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features:
