The first illustrated monograph presenting the work of British designer Lee Broom, founder of the eponymous brand and celebrated for his stylish, contemporary take on classic design products.

The book explores the many influences and ideas behind Broom’s portfolio of more than 100 products as well as highlights the way in which he showcases his work through original and engaging installations, exhibitions, and films. Lee Broom furniture, lighting, and accessories, some of which is now held in the permanent collections of cultural institutions in London and New York, is at once familiar and yet feels new — a signature skill of reinterpretation and the mix of classicism and modernity.

The book is presented thematically in four chapters, each relating to a defining aspect of Broom’s design personality. “Art Form” explores Broom’s relationship with architecture and silhouette, as well as the way in which he works with form, balance, and symmetry. “History Repeats Itself” delves into Broom’s fascination with historical starting points and reinvention and how techniques of the past can inform the future. “Material Boy” focuses on Broom’s meticulous approach to the process of making, his clever use of materials, and the art of collaboration. Finally, “Drama of Design” is a study of Broom’s background in theater and fashion and how both have permeated his creative thinking and the way he presents his work as immersive experiences.

With special contributions by Christian Louboutin, Vivienne Westwood and Kelly Wearstler.

The first book to celebrate the life and work of Australian designer Grant Featherston, best known for his Contour chairs and creator of hundreds of mid-century designs.

This is the first book to celebrate the life and work of Grant Featherston (1922–1995), the Melbourne-based industrial designer best-known for his Contour chairs. This collection was designed and developed in the early 1950s and remains highly sought after by mid-century modern collectors in Australia and overseas – often fetching $10,000 or more at auction.

Featherston, later joined by his second wife, Mary, designed hundreds of chairs over the next thirty years; however, this astonishing Australian industrial design partnership has gone largely uncelebrated until now. Featherston focuses on the chairs produced between 1947 and 1975 and presents a new biography of the designer, drawn from archival research and interviews with his peers. It is extensively illustrated with over 250 beautiful photographs and includes a selection from the previously unpublished personal archive of Ian Howard, the former Managing Director of Melbourne-based manufacturer Aristoc.

Contents List:

Preface • Introduction • 1. The Early Years • 2. The Contour Range • 3. Beyond Wood 4. The Age of Steel: The Aristoc Years • 5. The Talk of the Towns • 6. The Search for an Australian Style • 7. Into the Space Age: The Future is Plastic • 8. One Night Seats 9. Age of the Beanbag • 10. Revival and Legacy

Available again as of October 2019| Atmospherically illustrated tribute to the brilliant Danish designer and his own home, an icon of good taste

Birgit Lyngbye Pedersen was looking for the right sofa for a house from the fifties and discovered Finn Juhl (1912–1989), whose furniture is experiencing a renaissance in the wake of the retro wave. When Juhl’s house in Charlottenlund, which he designed and decorated in 1941–42, came up for sale, Pedersen purchased the building and all of its furnishings, presenting it immediately afterward to the adjacent Ordrupgaard Museum.

This monograph takes a look at Finn Juhl—alongside Hans J. Wegner and Arne Jacobsen one of the most important Danish Modernists—in an agreeably unpretentious way. Per H. Hansen, a renowned expert in Scandinavian furniture design, provides a humorous, extremely informative description of Juhl’s unconventional character and classic furniture—the Chieftain Chair, the Pelican Chair, or the Poet Sofa. Drawings, original photographs, images of the newly curated house (2008), and an amusing final chapter about his patrons round off this unusual volume.

Lauded by FT’s How to Spend It as “one of the world’s best antique and vintage furniture stores,” Galerie Half offers a stylish blend of twentieth-century design, European antiques, and eclectic rarities.

A favorite purveyor to the Los Angeles design cognoscenti, Galerie Half is imbued with a sense of timeless imperfection. Pieces from disparate design traditions converge seamlessly in a single room: a bleached Gustavian daybed is flanked by a Roman statue, a Venetian mirror reflects African masks, and a rustic farmhouse table is framed by caned chairs. Galerie Half is talented at constructing such diverse compositions. A vivid hue can create synchronicity between the timeworn patina of a glazed terracotta planter and the softened leather of an Advocat and Press chair by Le Corbusier–Pierre Jeanneret. A monochromatic palette of contrasting textures can ground a room, creating harmony between luxurious and humble materials, or signed and anonymous designs. Similarly, complementary shapes can provide balance — the horizontal stripes on a Finnish floor lamp echo those in Marcel Breuer’s 1932 armchair, and the seductive curve of Carlo Mollino’s Suora lamp mimics that of Rick Owens’s marble stool. The genius of Galerie Half and the celebrity homes that they have appointed lies in this artful curation of individual elements with soul.

The transcendent gallery is a haven for Los Angeles interior designers and star Hollywood clientele, including Ellen DeGeneres, Amanda and Jason Bateman, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jason Statham.

Included for the first time in one volume are all Galle's major works of furniture, both those he designed as unique pieces for an exclusive clientele and those he displayed at two World Expositions and at the annual Paris Salons between 1889 and his untimely death in 1904

Emille Gallé was one of the great names of the Art Nouveau movement in France, and founder of the famous École de Nancy. A polymath and committed social activist, he was best known for his glasswork and faience. Furniture became his third discipline after experimenting with the manufacture of wooden bases on which he could mount his glass vases.

Following the French tradition of furniture decoration known as marqueterie, his work is characterised by its meticulous decorative veneers, stained with subtle organic dyes; and panels inlaid with stunningly intricate country scenes and flowers.

This important book outlines all of Galle's major works of furniture, from the pieces uniques that were designed for an exclusive clientele, to those displayed between 1889 and 1904 at the annual Paris Salons and two World Expositions. The recent emergence of many of his objets de luxe enables the reader to understand many of his pieces for the first time.

Written by Decorative Arts specialist Alastair Duncan, Gallé Furniture documents the history of Gallé's furniture production from his favourite motifs to the ways in which he used furniture design to express his social and political ideals. Duncan includes an encyclopedic range of models created in the Gallé Workshops both during and after his lifetime. Beautifully illustrated, and containing translations of Gallé's 'Notes to the Juries' of the World Expositions, this stunning publication will leave the reader captivated by this remarkable expression of the new art that changed the European aesthetic forever.

In recent years, there is a real revival and appraisal of the works of the mid-century modern movement among architects and interior designers:  the furniture, lighting and objects designed by Alvar Aalto, Charles & Ray Eames, Eileen Gray, Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Pierre Jeanneret, Finn Juhl, Vladimir Kagan, Poul Kjaerholm, Florence Knoll, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Børge Mogensen, Serge Mouille, George Nakashima, George Nelson, Verner Panton, Ico Parisi, Charlotte Perriand, Gio Ponti, Jean Prouvé, Sergio Rodrigues, Jean Royère, Eero Saarinen, Arne Vodder, Jules Wabbes, Ole Wanscher, Hans J. Wegner, Jorge Zalszupin and many others is integrated in their most exclusive projects and their best pieces are sold at record prices at Christies, Philipps, Sotheby's.

In the U.S., the mid-century modern movement in interiors, product and graphic design and architecture was a reflection of the International and Bauhaus movements including the works of Gropius, Florence Knoll, Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Brazilian and Scandinavian architects were very influential, with a style characterized by clean simplicity and integration with nature.

In Europe, the influence of  Le Corbusier and the CIAM resulted in an architectural orthodoxy manifest across most parts of post-war Europe that was ultimately challenged by the radical agendas of the architectural wings of the avant-garde. A critical but sympathetic reappraisal of the internationalist oeuvre, inspired by the Scandinavian Moderns and the late work of Le Corbusier himself, was reinterpreted by groups such as Team X, including structuralist architects and the movement known as New Brutalism.

This chic XL coffee table book is an essential object for all mid-century design aficionados, interior designers with a passion for the modernist 1950s and for refined readers seeking inspiration for their own interior.

In 20 reports, interior designers and passionate collectors of mid-century furniture, lighting, objects and artworks show how carefully selected touches of high-end mid-century modernism can contribute to a unique living environment.

Published in association with the V&A, a comprehensive history of plywood, from its use in 18th-century furniture to its popularity in the digital age

Plywood is an astonishingly versatile material, made by gluing together layers of cross-grained veneers, creating a pliable board that can be stronger than solid wood. Stylish and practical, plywood offers huge possibilities for experimental design, and it has been used to make a wide range of products, from aeroplanes, boats and automobiles to architecture and furniture. This book traces the history of plywood from its use in 18th-century furniture, through its emergence as an industrial product in the 19th century, to a material celebrated by 20th-century modernists such as Alvar Aalto and Charles and Ray Eames. An ideal material for the digital age, plywood has become popular again in recent years and is widely used in contemporary design and manufacture.

Produced to accompany an exhibition at the V&A, this book is the first comprehensive study of the history of plywood and its myriad applications throughout the ages, unveiling the stories behind objects that surround us and that we often take for granted.
