The history of photography began nearly 200 years ago, but only relatively recently has it been fully recognised as a medium in its own right. Cologne’s Museum Ludwig was the first museum of contemporary art to devote a substantial section to international photography. The L. Fritz Gruber collection, from which this book is drawn, is one of the most important in Germany and one of the most representative anywhere in the world, constituting the core of the museum’s holdings.

Taschen 25th Anniversary Series

In 1919 publishing company Van Cortenberg published photographs from World War One with the title "Never Let Us Forget". Those pictures were sold as postcards for the benefit of widows and orphans.

This book collects these photographs together; 365 images at the western front of World War One give the reader a unique view of the battlefield and the daily life in and around the trenches: wounded people, soldiers relaxing, arms, ammunition factories with civilians, guards, cold winters, airplanes, artillery and soldiers marching towards the front.

All the featured pictures have a legend in 4 languages; some of them have larger comments and are placed in an historical context.

From a delivery boy to one of the most important industrialists in American history, George Eastman`s career developed in a particularly American way. The founder of Kodak died in 1932, and left his house to the University of Rochester. Since 1949 the site has operated as an international museum of photography and film, and today holds the largest collection of its kind in the world. The continually expanding photography collection contains over 400,000 images and negatives - among them the work of Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Ansel Adams and others - as well as 23,000 cinema films, five million film stills, one of the most important silent film collections, technical equipment and a library with 40,000 books on photography and film. The George Eastman House is a pilgrimage site and a place of worship for researchers, photographers and collectors from all over the world.

Around the turn of the 20th century, he founded the Photo-Secession, a progressive movement concerned with advancing the creative possibilities of photography, and by 1903 began publishing Camera Work, an avant-garde magazine devoted to voicing the ideas, both in images and words, of the Photo-Secession. Camera Work was the first photo journal whose focus was visual, rather than technical, and its illustrations were of the highest quality hand-pulled photogravure printed on Japanese tissue. This book brings together all photographs from the journal’s 50 issues.

Die beruflichen Anfänge eines der wichtigsten Photographen des 20. Jahrhunderts waren bisher kaum erforscht. August Sander (1876-1964), der mit seinem epochalen Portraitwerk Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts ästhetisch und konzeptuell Maßstäbe setzte, die bis heute gültig sind, begann seine Laufbahn als selbständiger Photograph im österreichischen Linz. Dort eröffnete er 1901 ein Atelier für Portrait- und Landschaftsaufnahmen, knüpfte gesellschaftliche Kontakte, die seinem Geschäft zugute und den eigenen künstlerischen und musikalischen Neigungen entgegenkamen und beteiligte sich - auch mit Gemälden - an Ausstellungen und Wettbewerben. In Sanders Linzer Zeit fallen die auf breiter Front geführten Diskussionen um eine Erneuerung des Mediums. Der »Piktoralismus« der Jahrhun- dertwende und die kommerzielle Studiophotographie gerieten mehr und mehr ins Kreuzfeuer der Kritik. Vor allem beim Portrait wurde der Ruf nach mehr Lebensnähe und Authentizität laut. August Sander fand sich hier in seiner eigenen Suche nach neuen gestalterischen Mitteln bestätigt - und anerkannt. Als die Familie 1909 nach Köln übersiedelte, waren die Grundlagen für die weitere Entwicklung seines photographischen Werks gelegt. Rund 330 Originale haben sich aus Sanders Linzer Jahren erhalten. Ergänzt durch weiteres Bildmaterial, das nur in Reproduktionen oder über Beschreibungen in Katalogen und Fachblättern greifbar ist, ergab sich ein »Linzer Bestand«, den die Photographische Sammung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Köln in Kooperation mit der Landesgalerie Linz einer eingehenden wissenschaftlichen Recherche unterzogen hat. It was the Belle Époque, a time before air travel or radio, at the brink of a revolution in photography and filmmaking, when Burton Holmes (1870–1958) began a lifelong journey to bring the world home. From the grand boulevards of Paris to China’s Great Wall, from the construction of the Panama canal to the 1906 eruption of Mount Vesuvius, Holmes delighted in finding “the beautiful way around the world” and made a career of sharing his stories, colorful photographs, and films with audiences across America. As a young man, Holmes was mentored by John L. Stoddard, a pioneer of the U.S. travelecture circuit, who passed on his well-established mantle when he retired. Holmes roamed the globe throughout the summer and traversed the United States all winter, transforming the staid lecture tradition into an entertaining show. He coined the term “travelogue” in 1904 to advertise his unique performance and thrilled audiences with two-hour sets of stories timed to projections of multihued hand-painted glass-lantern slides and some of the first “moving pictures.” Paris, Peking, Dehli, Dubrovnik, Moscow, Manila, Jakarta, Jerusalem: Burton Holmes was there. He visited every continent and nearly every country on the planet, shooting over 30,000 photographs and nearly 500,000 feet of film. This book represents the best of the Holmes archive, brimming with brilliant color photographs not published in decades. Pam Roberts was Curator at the British Royal Photographic Society from 1982-2001. She lives in Bath.

A visual history of the 20th century, the photographs in this volume cover events which range from the hard history of politics to new inventions, the arts, society and fashion. The images have been drawn from international agencies such as Life, Magnum, Picture Post and Stern. The book is divided into six chronological sections corresponding to significant historical moments. Each section opens with a short historical overview which introduces the main concerns during the period covered. There is also a selection of quotations which capture the flavour of the period covered. There are extended captions at the end of each section providing historical information about each photograph.

This selection of over 1,000 photographs was assembled under the direction of the photo editor of London's Sunday Times Magazine, Bruce Bernard, who provided the text. These photographs provide a wide scope of 20th-century life. Most are documentary in style, representing major historical events, but the worlds of fashion, entertainment and popular culture are represented, too.
