About the Author:

Sally Mann is a celebrated American artist and the author of several critically acclaimed books of photography, as well as the memoir Hold Still, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. She still lives in Lexington.

The amiably spontaneous pictures taken by Sam Shaw (1912–1999) are well known: the native and life-long New Yorker shot countless cover photographs for Life and Look in the fifties and sixties, and later also took the still images for the films he produced himself. Shaw and Marilyn Monroe were friends, and he captured her unique aura in countless unpretentious portraits. During the filming of The Seven Year Itch, he staged his probably best known picture with her: Marilyn standing over a subway grate, a waft of air blowing the skirt of her white dress above her knees.

Sam Shaw also portrayed almost every major Hollywood star of his day, consistently capturing the moment in his quest for truthfulness, with enthusiasm and from a new perspective, just as if he were selecting the camera angle for a film sequence. His previous books include A Private View (1998), Sante D'Orazio: Photographs (2000), and Gianni and Donatella (2007).

Ed Ruscha (b. 1937) is a painter, photographer and graphic artist, and one of the founders of Pop Art. Known for his landscapes with superimposed slogans and "word paintings," Ruscha has had many international retrospectives, and represented the USA at the 2005 Venice Biennale. He lives and works in Los Angeles.

  The list of celebrities who have sat for New York-based photographer reads like a Who's Who in American show business. Sirota's works is highly distinctive, her approach unconventional, and she has an extremely intense relationship to her subjects. In fact, it is Sirota's autodidactic style, perhaps, which lies at the heart of her success. Many of these photos, originally published under the title Guess Who, are part of a series of enigmatic and misleading portraits of celebrities. By disguising faces that are otherwise immediately recognizable, Sirota raises questions about the genre of celebrity portraiture, and allows us to look beyond the glamorous surface and into the person within. Born of Russian parents in Paris in 1928, the renowned photographer Elliot Erwitt arrived in the U.S. in the late 1930's and studied Photography in Los Angeles. He won recognition for his work in the 1940's and 1950's with the publication of photographs in Life Magazine and Collier's and in 1953, joined the prestigious Magnum photographic agency. The range of his subjects reflected his enormous talents - from the everyday reality of the post-war years to the glamour of Hollywood stars such as Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe to portraits of political leaders such as Nikita Kruschev. Erwitt later became a highly successful advertising photographer. In the 70's Erwitt refined his sense of irony, and in addition to comedy and film work, shot his landmark series of photographs of people and their dogs, memorably documenting the unique world shared by canine and human. Eliott Erwitt currently lives in New York City.
