Tibetan culture revives in hidden Himalayan kingdom.

Photographers Luigi Fieni and Kenneth Parker document the cultural revival of Tibetan Mustang “the hidden kingdom” of the Himalayas. A restoration project of its sacred temple murals directed by Luigi Fieni over more than 20 years has reawakened Buddhist traditions. Included is Mustang’s extraordinary landscape as well as the Lobas’ spiritual and secular way of life.

The kingdom of Mustang, where Tibetan Buddhist tradition continues, is emerging as a beacon of community-directed art conservation and resurgent culture. Sacred temples dominate the medieval capital Lo Monthang. Following centuries of deterioration a mural restoration project has taken place over more then 20 years, directed by conservator/photographer Luigi Fieni. This included training the unskilled Lobas in Western conservation methods. This extraordinary initiative led to a vibrant cultural renaissance in the kingdom.

About the Authors:

Luigi Fieni is the lead art conservator and photographer of the Mustang project. His works restoring ancient Buddhist art across Asia have been published and exhibited worldwide.
Kenneth Parker is a large-format photographer, working principally in remote areas, producing a body of work in traditional film format which have been, widely exhibited and published.
Amy Heller is a Tibetologist and art historian who teaches at University of Bern, Institute for the Science of Religion and who writes on Tibetan art and culture.
HH Sakya Trichen is the revered forty-first throne holder of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism dating back to 1073, one of the four main traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.

About the Author

Carol Beckwith was born in the United States in 1945 and educated at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts in painting and photography. In 1974, she decided to make Africa her working base so she could live within the cultures that inspired her photography and painting. 

Born in 1947 and educated in Australia, Angela Fisher graduated with a degree in Social Science from Adelaide University. After working with the Aborigines in Australia, Fisher moved to Kenya in 1970. 

Together, Beckwith and Fisher embarked upon a study of the peoples and cultures of the Horn of Africa and published their photography in a series of books: African Ark (1990), their two-volume landmark African Ceremonies (1999), and Faces of Africa (2004). Beckwith and Fisher exhibit internationally and lecture widely at prestigious venues. Their magazine credits include National Geographic, Natural History, African Art, the Observer Magazine, Time, Life, Vogue, Marie Claire, and Elle.

All across the Americas, from the 16th century onwards, enslaved Africans escaped their captors and struck out on their own. These runaways, having found their freedom, established their own communities or joined with indigenous peoples to forge new identities.

Cimarron, borrowing a Spanish-American term for these fugitive former slaves, is a new series of photographic portraits of their descendants. From Brazil, Colombia, the Caribbean islands and Central America, as far as the southern USA, elaborate masquerades are staged that celebrate and keep alive the memory of African slaves and their descendants. Stock characters are portrayed in costume, or in grotesque or satirical representations. A huge variety of African tribal dress, wild ritual regalia and shimmering Mardi Gras outfits feature in breathtaking succession. Vividly coloured silks and cottons combine with woven fibres, leaves, feathers, and bodypaint; props include emblems of slavery and slavemasters – ropes, sticks, guns and machetes.
