About the author

Eric Shanes is primarily a painter who has exhibited many times in London and elsewhere. He is one of the world’s leading authorities on Britain’s greatest visual artist, J.M.W. Turner, and the author of ten bestselling books and catalogues on the life and work of that major European figure. Additionally, Shanes has also written bestselling books and catalogues on Brancusi, Warhol, Hockney, The Golden Age of British Watercolours, and on the Impressionists in London. Parkstone International has published two books by Eric Shanes, one on J.M.W. Turner, the other on Andy Warhol. Shanes is a Vice-President of the Turner Society and its current Chairman, as well as the Founding Editor of Turner Studies, a scholarly journal published by the Tate Gallery. He has also frequently contributed articles on Turner, Brancusi and other artists to specialist and popular journals and newspapers. About the author:
Nathalia Brodskaïa is a curator at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. She has published monographs on Rousseau, Renoir, Derain, Vlaminck, and Van Dongen, as well as many books on the Fauves and Naïve Art. She is currently working on a study of French painters at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.

The Wiener Werkstätte or Vienna Workshops were founded in 1903 by architect Josef Hoffmann and artist Koloman Moser. Beginning in 1907, the Wiener Werkstätte began publishing a numbered series of postcards, which would ultimately exceed 1,000. There were numerous cards designed to celebrate holidays, such as Easter, Christmas, New Year’s, and others. When the fashion department was founded in 1910, costume and accessories became another popular subject depicted in the postcards, along with illustrations of places in Vienna and elsewhere in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Europe. All of the major designers who worked for the firm were contributors in this medium including Josef Hoffmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, and Dagobert Peche. Other noteworthy artists who were active in this area include Moriz Jung, Rudolf Kalvach, Mela Koehler, and Maria Likarz, among others. This publication is the first fully illustrated catalogue raisonné on Wiener Werkstätte postcards to appear in English.

The classicist

French painter Nicolas Poussin(Никола Пуссен) (1594-1665) spent most of his working life in Rome turning out works that fused the best features of Renaissance painting with influences of antiquity. Poussin was highly prolific and was considered by his contemporaries to be the greatest living painter, a man whose work embodied the ideal of French classical art. Poussin himself stressed logic and clarity in his work, formulating doctrines with the aim of intellectualizing art; in the latter, he succeeded in leaving an influence in art that lasted centuries.
