ILLUSTRATIONS: 94 col.718 b&w

The Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London in 1851 was the first of a series of international exhibitions that have continued, in one form or another, to the present day. The content of these exhibitions gave nations and individual companies of the world the opportunity to display their specialised skills and present new ideas and products to a much wider public.

In this book, Jonathan Meyer looks at major international exhibitions held during the nineteenth century and focuses on the important changes taking place at this time, in both society and design. He examines the enormous impact of the Industrial Revolution and how it came to influence the decorative arts, through changes in machinery and scientific methods.

This book contains a wide-ranging and striking collection of illustrations, mostly from contemporary sources, providing the reader with a very good idea of the exceptionally high quality of inventiveness and workmanship displayed by the manufacturers and their exhibits. Examples discussed and illustrated cover most areas of manufacture and include ceramics; silver and metalwork; furniture; cast iron and garden furniture; chandeliers and candelabra; clocks; bronze ornament; textiles; chimney-pieces and interior design.

Noma Bar
ID: 3929
Видавництво: Mark Batty Publisher

It requires skilled eyes and hands for artists to render subjects by translating their personalities, physical traits and careers into a few well-executed lines. Having worked for such publications as The New York Times, Esquire, The Guardian and Time Out London, Noma Bar is one artist capable of such visual feats. From famous celebrities like Steven Spielberg to infamous ones like Michael Jackson, to cultural icons like Albert Einstein and Elvis, to political figures like George Bush and Sadaam Hussein, Bar has made a career of creating caricatures through illustrations that rely on the power of association, and sometimes a bit of imagination.

Stephen King has hatchet eyes; broken chains accent Nelson Mandela’s facial expression; Joseph Stalin’s nose and mouth are shaped like the hammer and sickle. All of Bar’s faces exude the power of the visual, in that we recognize his subjects by what they do.

Steven Heller’s introduction examines Bar’s work by placing it in the history of caricature, pinpointing the clear influences but also acknowledging it as something wholly unique in its approach to this art form with a long and distinguished lineage. Informative and playful captions accompany every illustration, providing insight into Bar’s process.

A true cross-over book, Guess Who? The Many Faces of Noma Bar will appeal to graphic designers and pop-culture fans alike.

It all started around 1900, and wouldn`t you know the French were the first? Whether you call them men`s sophisticates, nudie books, or girly magazines, this long-ignored art form has a rich international history. Author Dian Hanson, a girly magazine editor for 25 years, follows the evolution of the genre from 19th century France through the Jazz Age, two world wars, the breast-centric 1950s to the end of the swinging 60s. Along the way you`ll see hundreds of vintage magazines from Argentina, England, France, Germany, Mexico, and the US. Some covers are exquisitely painted by top pin-up artists Enoch Bolles, George Quintana, Earl Moran, and Peter Driben. Others are posed by Hollywood stars like Jane Mansfield, Tina Louise, and Marilyn Monroe. All are fascinating artifacts of their time, including La Vie Parisienne, the first men`s lifestyle magazine from 1900; jazz-infused Sex magazine from 1926; legendary fetish digest Bizarre from 1949; Hugh Hefner`s Playboy from 1953; up to hippie-inspired Nude Rebellion from 1967.

In 33 chapters and 672 pages you`ll see these and many, many more, accompanied by a fact-filled, informative text sure to give you a new appreciation for the magazines once kept hidden under the mattress.

The hula dance, historic, exotic, and romantic, has epitomized the somewhat intangible lure of the tropical Pacific for over two centuries. The idealized Hula Girl - with her ukulele, grass skirt, and curvy figure - evolved into the ultimate symbol of fantasy and lured tourists to Hawaii. This collection of unique vintage images will transport you to the Islands in no time.

Our epoch has found in the painter-king the most formidable accuser of totalitarian thinking, from nuclear energy to the organization of our living environment. He lives up totally to his way of seeing things, against the contradictions of our post-industrial society.

His trump card is his art, the creator of beauty: of natural harmony, peace and joy. The extra-lucid power of his analytical sensitivity makes him the perfect decoder of global culture and its guided information. Hundertwasser reveals the prodigious quality resources of naturist empiricism against the abusive uniformity of rationalist totalitarianism, against the tyranny of ugliness and the iron rule of its straight line.

It is all inscribed in his painting, which is the revelation of sensitivity, the open book of destiny; it translates intuition into images, and those images inspire the major orientations of his thinking and action. When concretized moreover, those orientations fit perfectly into the practical norms of his aesthetic. Based on the empirical, artisan and organic intelligence of man-nature relations, his project for society is a cry of hope in beauty, a sine qua non-condition for human development.

Viennese-native Friedrich Stowasser (1928-2000) called himself  Hundertwasser Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt. True to the colorful variety of his names, he pursued many activities as a painter, architect and ecologist, and as "one who awakens identities." This presentation of Hundertwasser's work in all of its different facets is guided by the artist's own view of himself and his purpose. And, because his work is virtually inseparable from his personal life and political activity, a vivid portrait of the artist takes shape before the reader's eyes. Excerpts from conversations between the author and the artist lend a sense of immediacy and authenticity to the narration.

Let there be light

In the beginning was the word, and in the Middle Ages was the zenith of the Bible. It was a time when bibles were commissioned by kings, princes, and high-ranking members of the Curia, whose wealth and influence begat ornately illustrated bibles of extraordinary craftsmanship. To mark the Year of the Bible, and in conjunction with the Austrian National Library`s exhibition of its most precious sacred manuscripts, TASCHEN is publishing this book that will make the finest of these illuminated manuscripts accessible to the general public. The Power and Glory of Illuminated Bibles covers examples from every epoch of the Middle Ages, presenting the Bible as it was visualized in both theological and historical contexts. As the beauty and significance of the illustrations are undeniable, the manuscripts are also examined from an art historical point of view. Texts by Andreas Fingernagel, Stephan Füssel, Christian Gastgeber, and a team of 15 scientific authors describe each manuscript in detail and explore the evolution of the Bible as well as the medieval understanding of history that is inherent in these versions of the Bible; also included is a glossary of important terms so that those not versed in bible history can enjoy the texts as well. This sumptuous publication of these rare and significant manuscripts - reproduced with the impeccable quality and modest price tag for which TASCHEN is known - is a truly divine event.

Its geographical location, its rampant urban development and its complex socio-political fabric make Istanbul an ideal backdrop for many artists, not only Turkish and Istanbul artists, but also artists from the diaspora or artists from abroad who have come to Istanbul as artists in residence. Through the selected works and the varied backgrounds of the artists, this publication attempts to show how city-dwellers face their reality and their history, and how, depending on their cultural, social and political background, they show their resistance to it and participation in it. In recent years, the number of artistic projects has increased, inviting dialogue and historical introspection. These artists accompany the movement of contemporary history. The publication will trace these developments.

Anatomically correct. An unsurpassed treatise of the human body

Discover one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated anatomical treatises ever published. The product of more than two decades of dedication, and spanning descriptive, surgical, microscopic, and general anatomy, as well as embryology, The Atlas of Anatomy marks to this day a major achievement in medical history and a breathtaking insight into the workings and wonder of the human body.

We owe a great debt to Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797–1849) for his Atlas of Anatomy, which was not only a massive event in medical history but also remains one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated anatomical treatises ever published.

Bourgery began work on his magnificent atlas in 1830 in cooperation with illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782–1871), a student of the French painter Jacques Louis David. The first volumes were published the following year, but completion of the treatise required nearly two decades of dedication; Bourgery lived just long enough to finish his labour of love, but the last of the treatise’s eight volumes was not published in its entirety until five years after his death.

The eight volumes of Bourgery’s treatise cover descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques (exploring in detail nearly all the major operations that were performed during the first half of the 19th century), general anatomy and embryology, and microscopic anatomy. Jacob’s spectacular hand-coloured lithographs are remarkable for their clarity, colour, and aesthetic appeal, reflecting a combination of direct laboratory observation and illustrative research. Unsurpassed to this day, the images offer exceptional anatomical insight, not only for those in the medical field but also for artists, students, and anyone interested in the workings and wonder of the human body.

He is the author of several anatomy and history books and numerous scientific and historical articles.

In the mid-60s, artists in the USA and Europe began planning works for sites outside the narrow boundaries of galleries and museums. It began with ephemeral enhancements or traces left in deserted landscapes, in the deserts of America, or in the moors of Scotland. Following this were spectacular earthen sculptures of gigantic proportions, some of which are still in the process of completion today. One distinguishing feature of Land Art is its critical preoccupation with the tradition of sculpture. Sculpture can now be an earthwork excavation, a field of metal poles, a buried hut, a trace in the grass, or even a book. Another of the movement's special characteristics is its emphasis on site-specific, outdoor works intended to lastingly alter our perception of places, and to set new parameters in art production and reception.
