Sparking joy: this book delivers the rainbow-splashed celebration we are all seeking after a year of pandemic fatigue and lockdown blues. It is a return to innocence and having fun.

Spectacularly colorful and packed with joie de vivre, this romp through 50 of the most colorful places on earth — from Greece to Japan, Indonesia to Italy — delivers a jolt of optimism and enthusiasm. From the Zhangye Danxia landform in Gansu, China, to the rainbow mountain in the Peruvian Andes, stunning photographs are paired with inspirational quotes from Mikati, whose enthusiasm for travel is intoxi-cating. Driven by her unabashedly optimistic spirit, Mikati has travelled the globe to gather — in her first book — a plethora of visual wonders: ancient monoliths, scenic islands, stunning artwork, electric cityscapes, white-sand seashores, ancient cobbled streets, and both classic and innovative architecture. The infectious, whimsical spirit that carries throughout these pages is reflective of Mikati’s own ultra-upbeat outlook on life.

About the Author:

Lebanese-born, Paris-raised Mira Mikati pursued her fashion ambitions from a young age, attending Paris’s Ecole Superieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode before gaining certificates from Parsons New York and Central Saint Martins. Her now-eponymous label was conceived in the early 2000s, with Selfridges and Bon Marche among the first to pick up orders. Her assembly of wares reflects the carefree and effortless style of a summer holiday. In spring 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic, Mikati opened her own boutique, Happy House, on London’s Walton Street.

Miranda Lash, C. Ondine Chavoya, Jace Clayton
ID: 15673
Видавництво: Rizzoli

The first book on artist, musician, and DJ Eamon Ore-Giron who mines the complex nature of Latinx identity, the history of the Americas, and the many legacies of abstraction in art.

Over the course of his career, Eamon Ore-Giron has examined the personal and historical ramifications of cultural hybridity. Raised in Tucson, Ore-Giron is inspired by his roots in the American Southwest, his visits to his father’s hometown of Huancayo, Peru, and his time spent as a practicing artist in California and Mexico. This catalogue brings together for the first time three pivotal chapters in Ore-Giron’s career: his Southwest and Peruvian-inspired figurative works from the 2000s; his paintings from the 2010s that engaged elements of both figuration and abstraction, including an ongoing series focused on Mesoamerican deities; and the sublime gold-based paintings from his recent “Infinite Regress” series.

Curator Miranda Lash, along with celebrated scholars C. Ondine Chavoya and Jace Clayton, explore Ore-Giron’s approach to de-colonizing the medium of painting, his impact within in the Los Angeles art scene, and his seminal work as a DJ who highlights the intersections between North and South American sound.

About the Author:

Miranda Lash is the Ellen Bruss Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver. C. Ondine Chavoya is a Professor of Art History and Latina/o/x Studies at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Jace Clayton is an artist and writer based in New York City, also known for his work as DJ /rupture.

Peter Waldron

Видавництво: Thames & Hudson

Between the 17th century and the 1917 revolution, the Russian Tsars became absolute rulers of the largest and most diverse empire in the world.

The splendour of their court and their capital city, St Petersburg, was extraordinary, but the imperial edifice was supported by the toil of millions of serfs tied to the land. This empire of contradictions – so powerful but so backward
– was to have a profound influence on both Europe and Asia.

Peter Waldron tells the stories of all the Russians, exploring how the vastness of the empire and its extremes of climate affected the lives of rulers and peasants alike. He examines the great flowering of Russian art, literature and music, the pressures for and against reform, and finally the fall of the Tsarist regime in a cataclysm of violence.

• Ideal for the general reader and indispensable to all students of the era
• Exclusive to the History Files series, is a set of loose-leaf facsimile documents, among them a letter from Peter the Great, an excerpt from Catherine the Great’s charter to the nobility, and the announcement of Tsar Nicholas II’s abdication in 1917

• Photographs, paintings, objects and contemporary maps – give further insight into the Tsarist regime
• Inset boxes on people, places and events and many quotations from Russian sources

Photographs by Fokion Zissiadis, Text by Alex Sheal
ID: 16272
Видавництво: Rizzoli

This stunning photographic volume is the permanent record of a long discovery trip into Vietnam's lost outposts.

Over two trips in the north, in spring and autumn 2016, Fokion Zissiadis covered some 6,000 kilometers of road, track and trail, and rocky mountains, close to Vietnam's far northern frontier. These epic extremes of the Vietnamese landscapes have resisted generations of invaders across the centuries and are home to an incredible humanity.

The photographs in this collection show us a Vietnam known only to those following less-traveled paths. Faced with the landscapes, we experience human life at the threshold of nature; faced with the people, we feel as close as we might get without meeting them. But even then, it takes a special eye to give us the view as if we're standing right there and to rediscover the beauty and the value right around us.

A man who has achieved a lot in life, Fokion Zissiadis is an architect, builder, and entrepreneur who has built one of the most amazing resorts in Europe. At this stage of his life, the Greek photographer has started to travel all over the world--Africa, Iceland, India--looking for the unseen side of the most remote landscapes and people of the planet.

This stunning volume comes in a protective box.

About the Authors:

Fokion Zissiadis first took an interest in photography during his years as an architecture student and gradually developed more personal, interpretative views of the landscapes he sought to capture. Alex Sheal's stories have featured in the New York TimesHuffington Post, and many other publications, and he has been the recipient of the David Higham Award and the New Writer Novella Prize.

Visual culture - art, advertising, architecture, cinema, television, cartography, video, the internet, and images of science - has shaped American national identity more than that of any other country. Covering the period from the late nineteenth century to the present day, the book explores how visual culture has at once transformed and consolidated the image of the United States.

American Visual Culture presents both an analysis of the diversity of American visual media and a critical introduction to the study and interpretation of visual culture.

Thematic chapters - on American urban and rural landscapes, icons, popular culture, art and photography, as well as on crime, anxiety and sex - describe the cultural, intellectual and historical context. Throughout, these themes are discussed in conjunction with clear and concise explanations of key visual theories and methodologies

Marco Folin

Italian Renaissance art is closely intertwined with the development of courts and court culture in much of the Italian territory. The patronage of the ruling families of the small Italian city-states greatly favoured the flourishing of the figurative arts and architecture, but also in music, literature, and theatre.

The book starts with an introduction by Marco Folin, the volume's editor, on the critical issues of court art and its historiography, followed by an important essay on the historical and geographical framework of Renaissance Italy, illustrated by 18 especially-made maps, useful to understand the complexity and fragmentation of the country in the 15th century. The role of princely patronage in the development of music and literature is then examined: from the place of the humanists at court to the link between music and propaganda, from the first theatrical representations to the rise of the printing press and the publication of the most famous Renaissance books: Castiglione's Book of the Courtier and Ariosto's Orlando Furioso.

The second, longer part of the volume, is arranged geographically and covers the entire peninsula, giving attention not only to the major courts, such as Milan, Mantua, Ferrara, Urbino, papal Rome, Naples and the crypto-court of the Medicis in Florence, but devoting chapters to the minor courts spread around northern and central Italy, from the Paleologues rulers of Montferrat to the Malatesta court in Rimini, from Carpi under the Pios to the Orsinis' rule in Bracciano.

The main chapters are enriched by texts focused on particular aspects of Renaissance culture and politics: the courts of the cardinals and the southern barons, the patronage of the condottieri, the specificity of Venetian state-commissions, etc.

The essays are written by well-known Italian scholars - such as Franco Piperno on music, Rinaldo Rinaldi on literature, Alessandro Cecchi on Medicean Florence and Alessandro Angelini on the papal court in Rome - and are accompanied by a rich and accurate iconography, showing not only famous masterpieces but also lesser known works of art and architecture.

The book is completed by an annotated bibliography for the various chapters and by an index of names and places.

In 1798, Napoleon Bonaparte launched an expedition of 35,000 soldiers to conquer Egypt. The campaign was a military and political disaster but nonetheless it had a profound and lasting impact, by revealing the splendour of a mysterious and forgotten civilization.

For Napoleon's ships also carried some 500 scholars, scientists and artists whose task it was to study the country and its customs. Traversing a country at war under the stifling heat of southern Egypt, they embarked on the first major study of a land then all but unknown to Europeans.

They discovered the Valley of the Kings outside Thebes. They found the Rosetta stone, which when deciphered enabled scholars to read hieroglyphics. And their combined efforts culminated in what is surely one of the most ambitiously comprehensive work ever published: the Description de l'Egypte in 10 volumes with 837 copperplate engravings and more than 3,000 drawings. It was as though they were cataloguing the world's richest museum covering three major themes with their work: "Antiquités", "Etat Moderne" and "Histoire Naturelle", the first two of which are reproduced fully in this special edition.

Sacred paintings of the Christian Orthodox

This historical survey covers some one-and-a-half millennia of Christian imagery and includes descriptions of selected masterpieces

The icons in this book come from the Icon Museum in Recklinghausen, which possesses the most extensive and highest-quality icon collection outside the Orthodox world. Icons do not depict “details” of the earthly world, but rather an unearthly reality. In accordance with their sacred function, the painters had to keep to venerable traditions. This historical survey covers some one-and-a-half millennia and includes descriptions of selected masterpieces, providing a graphic introduction to this fascinating world of images. While the book's historical introduction traces the history of icon painting back to late Antiquity and the early Byzantine period, the examples in the picture section start with a 14th century Russian example and extend from the exquisite 15th century Byzantine icon “St Luke Paints the Mother of God” across the centuries to one from Transylvania (Romania) dating from 1887.

About the Series:
Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre Series features:

* a detailed introduction with approximately 35 photographs, plus a timeline of the most important events (political, cultural, scientific, etc.) that took place during the time period
* a selection of the most important works of the epoch; each is presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and, on the facing page, a description/interpretation of the work and brief biography of the artist as well as additional information such as a reference work, portrait of the artist, and/or citations

Japan's impact on Western art was as immediate and almost as cataclysmic as the influence of the West on Japanese life. After Commodore Perry opened Japan's door to the outside world in 1858, a wealth of visual information from the Japanese traditions of ceramics, metalwork and architecture, as well as printmaking and painting, reached the West and brought electrifying new ideas on composition, colour and design. This is a study of how Japanese ideas have inspired artists such as Monet, Degas, Whistler and Van Gogh. Japanese conventions of symbolism underlie the use of decorative motifs in European symbolism and art nouveau, and the Zen idea of spontaneity is the ultimate source of both the apparently capricious shapes of art nouveau ware and the development of an abstract "calligraphy" in abstract expressionism.
