Well-crafted and class-tested, this guide to figure drawing features a unique teaching method. It focuses on learning to draw complete figures prior to the study of individual components, and it stresses action figures rather than the customary static examples favoured by most drawing and anatomy texts. Employing more text than typical art instruction books, it presents thirty figure drawing lessons and fifty-six drawings and figures. Each lesson includes detailed instructions on anatomical drawing, accompanied by visual examples of strokes, boxes, and measurements.

Author Alon Bement taught art instruction to future art teachers at Columbia University and later founded the prestigious Maryland Institute of Art. His students included Georgia O'Keeffe, who regarded him as a mentor and major influence. Bement's nontraditional approach offers students at all levels an excellent opportunity to build their visual acuity and technical skills.

The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, or Dresden State Art Collections, comprise the oldest, second-largest group of museums inGermany. The eleven museums united under this umbrella organization are among the most famous in the world, and they contain a wealth of unique art treasures that span a variety of themes and epochs, attracting visitors from around the globe. Augustus the Strong and his son, Augustus III - both electors of Saxony and kings of Poland during the eighteenth century - were extraordinary connoisseurs of the arts, and their enthusiastic patronage had a lasting impact on the development of the collections which today are exhibited in world-famous buildings, such as the Zwinger, the Rezidenz, and the Albertinum.

The year 2010 marks the 450th anniversary of the Dresden State Art Collections, and visitors are invited to travel through time - from the days of antiquity to the present. This opulent volume features numerous illustrations of very special highlights from the individual collections and the historical buildings that house them.

This beautiful volume documents an important moment in the history of the watercolour, as its practitioners moved from the tinted drawings to the creation of fully fledged works of art that rivaled oil paintings in their expressiveness and technical brilliance. With its rolling hills, cloud-laden skies and ever-shifting light, Britain was the perfect setting for such a revolution, as artists packed sketchbooks, brushes and paints, and headed for the countryside. Authors Wilton and Lyles document the evolution of the British watercolour, from the more classically inspired eighteenth-century landscapes to the vivid experiments in Naturalism and Romanticism, with their concomitant studies in light and atmosphere. Over 300 exquisite reproductions allow readers to appreciate the delicate colours and fine lines of these important works, while the authors’ authoritative and eminently readable texts enhance the overall experience of witnessing the birth of an independent medium, and some of the most breathtaking examples of watercolours the world has ever known.

Buxom bombshells. Pictures from an age when eroticism was still innocent

They've been exciting generations of men, on calendars and covers, as centrefolds or even on playing cards: pin-ups. What started as an exercise in oils was soon taken up in various media - pin-up mascots graced the fuselages of American fighters, and became an essential feature of the male world of garages and barracks. And the age of political correctness hasn't ended their appeal.

This book tells the tale of a genre as utterly American as the paintings of Edward Hopper, describing its origins and development in detail and showcasing the most important artists. With over 500 illustrations, The Great American Pin-Up is a comprehensive studies of the genre.

The authors:

Charles G. Martignette was an art dealer and collector of original paintings by 20th century American illustrators and artists. His gallery in Hallandale Beach, Florida, housed the world’s largest collection of commercial illustration art. As of 1975 he published numerous articles about magazine, advertising, calendar, pulp, paperback, glamour and pin-up art. Paintings from his collection have been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution as well as many other American and European museums. Charles G. Martignette died in 2008 in Hallandale, Florida.

Louis K. Meisel, owner-manager of one of the oldest galleries in New York’s Soho, has published several books and articles on contemporary art. In addition to art, he collects pin-up work.

At a time when music is increasingly being downloaded and uploaded, the art of packaging music is being lost. For the past five decades musicians have displayed their work inside packages that were often as integral as the music itself.

This book brings together 250 of the greatest album covers of all time and is arranged chronologically, beginning in 1956. There is a 50-strong judging panel selecting the final 250 entries, those judges having been drawn from the great and the good of the music industry. The panel includes famous designers, musicians, producers and record company executives whose reasons for choosing covers will accompany the illustration of the sleeve.

From rock ''n'' roll to pop, R&B to jazz, blues and even folk some of the album covers included are obvious and essential to such a volume, while others will surprise readers and jog memories. The chosen entries might not necessarily be of a best-selling release, but they will be important artistically, stylistically or culturally.

This book will undoubtedly be an object of discussion and argument for music fans the world over.

About the Author

Miles has written several seminal books on the Beat generations, including biographies of Ginsberg, Burroughs and Kerouac, and in October 2002 published his memoirs of the decade titled In The Sixties (Jonathan Cape). He is the author of the best selling Hippie (Cassell Illustrated, 2003). Grant Scott has art directed several leading magazines, including Tatler and English Elle, and has worked with photographers such as William Klein, Jean Loup Sieff, David Bailey and Don McCullin. Choosing to move behind the camera lens, Scott was winner of the John Kobal Portrait Awards 2000 and has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery.

This elegant book features exquisite reproductions of a rare 17th-century album of floral illustrations.

Very little is known about The Green Florilegium. Neither signed nor dated, it is generally attributed to the German painter Hans Simon Holtzbecker and originates from the library at Gottorp Castle in Schleswig, on the border of Germany and Denmark. The album now resides at the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen. Recently the book was painstakingly restored, allowing the delicate illustrations to come to a new life in their original colours. This beautiful volume reproduces the original work of 400 botanical illustrations on 178 plates. It also includes an introductory essay and captions with basic information on each flower. Published for the first time, this lovely book is a must-have for lovers of botanical illustration and a sublime example of the art of conservation.

The Book That Changed the World. A complete reprint of the revolutionary Gutenberg Bible “B42”

The printing press has been called the greatest invention of the second millennium. Published in Mainz around 1454, the Gutenberg Bible was the first major Western publication to be printed with movable metal type, ushering in a whole new age of knowledge distribution through mass-produced books.

Before Gutenberg, woodcut printing and early forms of movable type printing had been mastered in Asia, but had yet to reach Europe. Instead, each book had to be copied by hand in a long, labor-intensive process. Not only did Gutenberg’s innovation of mechanical movable type significantly speed up production without sacrificing quality, it irreversibly enriched public knowledge, pioneering mass communication and allowing people to access ideas and participate in discussions like never before. When it comes to radical revolutions in media, the Gutenberg Bible is up there with the Internet.

This facsimile edition derives from one of the very few surviving complete vellum Latin originals worldwide; the Göttingen Library edition, one of the most valuable books in the world, listed in the UNESCO Memory of the World program. All 1,282 pages of this artistic and technological masterwork are included, along with a companion book written by Stephan Füssel, Gutenberg-Chair at Mainz University, introducing Gutenberg, his transformative influence, and two important documents of the time: the Göttingen Model Book which was used to illuminate the Göttingen Library edition and the only surviving notary document by Ulrich Helmasperger, which records the history of this unique invention and its product, the Gutenberg Bible.

The author:

Stephan Füssel is director of the Institute for Book Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, and holder of the Gutenberg Chair at the same university. He has published prolifically on the early days of printing, the sale and publication of books between the 18th and 20th centuries, and the future of communications.

"After the face, the hand is the part of the human body which is the most independent, the most distinctive and the most particular. (...) Hands in painting - whether they be lyrical, delicate, lively and alert, or else violent, nervy and tragic - are never mere details, as can be seen in these drawings, but are focal points which contain and distribue the energy of a picture. "
Jean-Christophe Bailly

Chosen by Jean-Christophe BAILLY, 101 sketches, studies, paintings, watercolours by Léonard de VINCI, PICASSO, del SARTO, MICHELANGELO, RAFFAELLO, DÜRER, HOLBEIN, RUBENS, VAN DYCK, WATTEAU, TIEPOLO, INGRES, GERICAULT, DELACROIX, MILLET, MENZEL, SCHIELE... Most of them are full-page.
