Housing is the most omnipresent urban typology. Housing is also the essential architecture of the human condition. Perhaps more than any other architectural species, housing determines the ways urbanites construct their lives and build their shared futures.

The all-out war in Ukraine, started by the Russian Federation in 2022 has disproportionally affected housing and residential infrastructure. The destruction is so targeted, and the damage so significant that it has disfigured entire neighborhoods and erased entire cities. With the scale of damage and loss in mind, and the future wide-ranging reconstruction that will inevitably take place after the war, this study examines the history and typologies of mass housing in Ukraine. It does so in order to evaluate what is lost, explain the diversity of modes of urban living that exist in Ukrainian cities, and finally, reconsider the narrative of how Ukrainian housing came about.

The study covers the period of the last 100 years: the time of the most dramatic expansion and change in character of Ukrainian cities. It begins with the experimental buildings constructed in the Soviet Central and Eastern Ukraine and Polish Western Ukraine in the 1920s and 1930s, continues by looking at type projects from the Stalin era, as well as the serial apartment blocks built during the reigns of Khrushchev and Brezhnev and in the late USSR. Finally, it showcases individually designed, yet also typical residential buildings from the turbo-capitalist period of the 1990s and 2000s.

With the help of archival materials -- texts, blueprints, and photographs -- as well as contemporary documentation, the authors analyze 30 examples of Ukrainian-designed or modified housing types. Through uncovering the Ukrainian context, as well as the work of Ukrainian architects, design institutions, contractors, and developers, the history of Ukrainian housing is emancipated from the Russian narrative of the Soviet past. By doing so, we aim to write the history of a specifically Ukrainian building tradition and contribute to embedding it in the context of all-European architectural history.

Ukraine’s overlooked modernist buildings are under threat from development, decommunization and war. Photographer Dmytro Soloviov has crossed Ukraine documenting them to form the most comprehensive publication available on the subject.

What does Ukrainian Modernist architecture look like and why isn’t it better-known in the west?

Photographer and architectural tour guide Dmytro Soloviov is fighting to preserve the disappearing modernist heritage of his native Ukraine.

These innovative buildings are an extraordinary blend of function, avant-garde aesthetics and ingenious design, but despite these qualities, they remain largely unrecognised. This is a result of several factors, including the stigma of belonging to the Soviet era, corruption, neglect, as well as the ongoing threat of destruction from both unscrupulous developers and war.

Dmytro Soloviov is a Kyiv-based Ukrainian architecture photographer and researcher documenting modernist art and architecture. His lifelong mission is to preserve modernist heritage and promote its value. About the Author:

Renzo Mongiardino, born in Genoa in 1916, was one of the world’s most renowned designers of the 60s, 70s and 80s, and remains highly influential. Although trained as an architect, and at a time when modernism ruled design, Mongiardino found inspiration in the likes of Bernini, Piranesi, Palladio, and the theater. He counted among his clients Gianni Agnelli, Lee Radizwill, Gianni Versace, Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza, Rudolf Nuryev, Valentino, and Baron Guy de Rothschild. Equally at home in the world of performance, he collaborated with Franco Zeffirelli on many films, including The Taming of the Shrew with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton; and designed the set for Maria Callas’s triumphant return to opera in Tosca at Covent Garden. He died in 1998 at the age of 82.

Joel Salatin and his family own and operate Polyface Farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. The farm produces pastured beef, pork, chicken, eggs, turkeys, rabbits, lamb and ducks, servicing roughly 6,000 families and 50 restaurants in the farm’s bioregion. He has written 14 books to date, is editor of Stockman Grass Farmer Magazine, and lectures around the world on land healing and local food systems. Polyface Farm operates a formal apprenticeship program and conducts many educational workshops and events. 

Chris Slattery is a mechanical engineer turned farmer/homesteader. With years of experience in CAD/3D modeling coupled with his experience working with his father in the trades and a formal apprenticeship at Polyface, he is uniquely gifted to bring drawings to life. He currently resides on his family's 112-acre farm in south central Kentucky.

In the times when the Ukrainian art sphere was regulated by the Soviet institutions, local monumental and decorative arts existed at the frontier of the Party’s propaganda and the artistic thirst to experiments. Nowadays, Ukrainian mosaics are wrested out of the architectural context of the country in both literal and metaphorical ways. The artworks are liquidated from the buildings they were specifically created for and indiscriminately despised as ideological pieces of no value. Furthermore, in legal terms mosaics are not defined as objects of art that makes them unguarded in the face of the decommunization process.

Initially incepted as a guide, this book is an equally beneficial companion for the journey through space (in the context of the geographical area of modern Ukraine) and hitchhiking through time (in terms of Ukrainian cultural history). It incorporates the selection of Ukrainian mosaics which undermines the simplified perspective on the Soviet art heritage in Ukraine. The volume is generously supplemented with unique photographs of the documentary photographer Yevgen Nikiforov who continues the research, initially presented in the book Decommunized: Ukrainian Soviet Mosaics (2017). Together with the art historian Polina Baitsym who reveals striking linkages of the mosaics’ plots with broader historical context, he will guide you through the testimonies of the genuine creativity of Ukrainian monumental artists which managed to flourish on the most infertile soil.

This elaborate volume, authored by the designer’s son, is a splendid celebration of one of the world’s most inventive design minds. Combining whimsy and elegance, Piero Fornasetti (1913 –1988) transformed everyday objects like cups, scarves, and screens into works of art featuring his idiosyncratic leitmotifs, such as the hand, the female face, and luminescent fish. Additionally, he created a wide range of works, including idealized architectural fantasy drawings, book designs, and provocative nudes, as well as the decor for the luxury liner Andrea Doria. Perhaps most famous for dazzling pieces of trompe l’oeil furniture, Fornasetti was rediscovered in the 1980s and has remained much sought-after by collectors worldwide. Featuring 2,800 illustrations, many never before published, the monograph is designed to be an artist’s book that reflects as faithfully as possible Fornasetti’s own approach to design. Fornasetti’s work is organized by type and includes paintings, sculptures and etchings, furniture, graphics, textiles, glass, screens, trays, and ceramics, as well as smaller categories. With unique and exhaustive access to the archives, this epic undertaking covers detailed technical, biographical, and bibliographical information, including a list of exhibitions and a register of the complete works. A must-have for collectors and connoisseurs alike.

For fans, collectors and dealers Rizzoli's upcoming book Fornasetti: The Complete Universe is cause for massive celebration. Nearly 700 pages long, with 3,000 images and illustrations, it is a composite catalogue raisonne and coffee table book extraordinaire. For those ever frustrated with the paucity of information on Fornasetti, the book feels like a miracle.

I like to equate Fornasetti with Andy Warhol. Both had long, prolific careers that constantly replenished their output with material that was simultaneously fresh but iconic. Both were talented illustrators and masters of appropriation. Fornasetti is remarkable in the realms of both art and design in his enthusiastic embrace of figuration, antiquity and the ornate defying not only his generations aesthetic preferences but many trends inherent in Modernism.

Unlike Warhol, whose works are mostly priced in the million-dollar range, objects by Fornasetti remain accessible to a large segment of the population. Of course, there are Fornasetti pieces (notably 1950’s furniture emblazoned with his most iconic motifs) with price tags that approach six figures. However, there is also a significant amount of material available on the secondary market today that was made by the Fornasetti atelier during his lifetime. (Full disclosure: I am a dealer who specializes in vintage Fornasetti) Such pieces, including everything from silk scarves, lamps, umbrella stands, ashtrays, mirrors and decorated porcelain can be found in the several hundred to several thousand dollar range. Fornasetti: The Complete Universe is such an astounding book as for the first time there is an attempt to document and date everything (?!) that Piero created during his lifetime. Fornasetti has numerous motifs or subjects that he applied to an array of consumer goods that are uniquely his own notably malachite, mythology, playing cards, the personification of the sun and moon, musical instruments and “Themes & Variations” (which puts a woman’s face in over 300 surrealist scenarios).

The book is composed of two halves; one dedicated to his artistic ambitions and evolution, the second how his talents were applied to creating a host of elaborate and distinctive consumer products. Fornasetti’s son, Barnaba is largely responsible for both maintaining his father’s archives, the creation of this book and the enduring popularity of Fornasetti. Since his father’s death in 1988, Barnaba has actively reissued designs and licensed certain iconic images. Some purists may find it problematic that such post-humous work is included here. After all such pieces were not created nor overseen by the creator and will likely never appreciate in value.
