About the Authors:

Achille Salvagni was born in Rome in 1970 and graduated with an honors degree in architecture in 1998. In 2002, he created Achille Salvagni Architetti, a multidisciplinary firm for architecture and interior design, developing projects for residential buildings, luxury apartments, and yachts. Pilar Viladas, a former design editor at The New York Times Magazine and T Magazine, writes about design and architecture for a variety of publications. Benoist F. Drut is the owner of the influential New York design gallery Maison Gerard. He was instrumental in the development of a wide range of recognized and emerging artists, including Hervé Van der Straeten, Achille Salvagni, and Kiko Lopez.

David Adjaye, the son of a Tanzanian diplomat, spent his childhood moving between international cities before settling in London, where he was educated. Fresh out of the Royal Academy of Art, his early commissions reflected an influential generation of artists at the turn of the millennium with whom he shared a range of sensibilities. His artistic sensitivity, deft use of space and inexpensive, unexpected materials resulted in a number of iconic projects.

With the hindsight of almost twenty years of practice and a raft of high-profile projects around the world – perhaps best symbolized by his National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. – the significance of Adjaye’s earlier projects is clear. Never shying away from a challenge, Adjaye used his first projects as testbeds for what would become his unique, acclaimed and highly sought-after brand of ‘critical regionalism’.

This monograph presents the first projects of Adjaye’s corpus, many little documented. From London’s West End to Brooklyn, clever urban interventions and pavilions to private houses for artists and public buildings for the many. These early projects, brought together and presented with new analyses and recently uncovered archival material, testify to the originality of an architect at the height of his talents who is changing the face of our built world.

Following on from Adjaye – Works: Houses, Pavilions, Installations, Buildings, 1995–2007, published by Thames & Hudson in 2020, this book covers the impressive portfolio of work created by the architect between 2007 and 2015. During the years covered in this book, David Adjaye became interested in developing an architecture that was more expansive, taking him outside Europe to work on major projects such as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver and the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo. Designing buildings around the globe, including two projects connected with the post-Katrina reconstruction programme in New Orleans, Adjaye carefully tailored his approach to each place, sensitive to the important role architecture plays in affirming a sense of community and identity.

Peter Allison is a London-based exhibition curator and teacher. He is the author of many books, including the companion book to this title, David Adjaye – Works: Houses, Pavilions, Installations, Buildings, 1995-2007.

Between 1912 and 1968, Philip Trammell Shutze produced over 750 architectural works. Because he was so prolific, the book examines only his most essential work, which as a body represents an architectural achievement of a very high order of refinement, grace, and beauty.

A graduate of Georgia Tech, Shutze stayed one year at Columbia University before he won the prestigious Rome Prize, travelling shortly thereafter to Rome. There he remained for five years, learning everything he could about the great buildings of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

On his return to the U.S., Shutze worked in New York for Mott Schmidt, who designed townhouses for such families as the Astors, Morgans, and Vanderbilts, and he also worked for F. Burrall Hoffman, whose master-piece is Villa Vizcaya in Miami. Within a few years, though, he returned to Georgia, to design in the Classical and traditional styles some of the most beautiful buildings ever to grace the American landscape.

Elizabeth Meredith Dowling is an architect who long served as associate professor of architecture at Georgia Tech. In 2020 she received the ICAA Philip Trammell Shutze Lifetime Achievement Award, for her contributions to the fields of architecture, architectural history, and the teaching of design.

Autoban is one of the most sought-after design studios worldwide. Its gorgeous furniture and spectacular spaces meld respect for tradition with modern straightforwardness. Surprisingly, Autoban doesn’t hail from an established design center such as Berlin, London, or New York, but rather from Istanbul.

Since they founded Autoban 10 years ago, Seyhan Özdemir and Sefer Çağlar have been creating design at the nexus between Orient and Occident, Asia and Europe — a fitting reflection of the city in which they live and work. Throughout the ages, Istanbul has brought together East and West, as well as Islam and Christianity, in its cultural realm. This unique history continues to influence both the cityscape of the metropolis on the Bosporus and the self-image of its inhabitants.

Özdemir and Çağlar met at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, whose school of architecture is known for teachings that are strongly oriented around classic modernism. The name Autoban is inspired by the Turkish “Otoban” and the German “Autobahn” and stands for its penchant for “really stepping on the gas.”

Autoban’s understanding of design is based in equal measure on local elements and European design theory. Its interiors and furniture designs, which have attracted an international following, move fluidly between modern and traditional, minimalistic and elaborate, luxurious and rustic, and sparse and decorative, without ever appearing superficial or blatant.

This book presents a rich selection of Autoban’s breathtaking projects that are documented in striking photographs and plans. The distinctive and premium-quality concepts for restaurants, hotels, apartments, offices, and retail spaces collected here showcase the studio’s worldview between global cosmopolitanism and its own cultural idiosyncrasies.

The texts in the book were written by Vasif Kortun, director of Istanbul’s SALT, by the curator and cultural historian Deniz Erduman-Calis, and by design journalists Marie Le Fort and Shonquis Moreno. They give further insight into Autoban’s creative process and philosophy as well as the cultural context in which it works.

In only a short time, Autoban’s Seyhan Özdemir and Sefer Çağlar have established themselves as stars on the global design scene. They founded the studio in 2003 and, only one year later, were named “Best Young Designers of the Year 2004” by the magazine Wallpaper*. Autoban’s furniture is successfully distributed worldwide by De La Espada. The design studio epitomizes a new Turkish design sensibility and its designs for hotels and restaurants define the cityscape of modern Istanbul. Meanwhile, Autoban’s work can also be found around the world in places including Madrid, St. Petersburg, and Hong Kong as well as in Baku, Azerbaijan where they designed all of the interiors for the city’s airport. Balkrishna V. Doshi (b. 1927 in Pune) is one of the most influential pioneers of modern architecture in India. His life’s work was honored in 2018 with the prestigious Pritzker Prize. Doshi has realized more than one hundred projects, including administrative and cultural facilities, housing developments, and residential buildings. He has become internationally known for his visionary urban planning and social housing projects, as well as his involvement in education. His most important buildings include the School of Architecture in Ahmedabad (1966 – 68) and the Aranya housing development in Indore (1989).
