This volume presents light as an element with the same importance as furniture or layout; it is treated innovatively and imbued with a distinctive personality. In this book, light transcends the simple function of illumination, becoming a tool for emphasizing elements that modify space and turn it into something different by creating an interesting effect or simply a more pleasant atmosphere. This approach leads to homes with their own original identity.

Traditionally, the living room has been the domestic setting for social gatherings and the reception of guests. Over the last decades however, it has experienced many changes with respect to aesthetics and use. One example is the incorporation of movies at home and other technological systems devoted to leisure that have revolutionized the layout and forms acquired by furnishings that have always formed part of this room. In addition, the contemporary living room is also a place in which to rest, relay and enjoy personal hobbies, For this reason, one of the most common and popular trends consists of dividing the living room into two areas: one designated to the more conventional entertainment of conversation and reading and the other devoted to offering the pleasures made possible by state-of-the–art technology.

The loft as we know it today is quite different from its original conception during the 1960s, when this typology of residence became popularized to reconvert warehouses that artists maintained with very few means. Today a loft can simply imply an open-plan, diaphanous and flexible space that alludes to an industrial aesthetic through exposed materials like steel and wood. New materials and design techniques have produced a new generation of lofts that have transformed it into a sophisticated asset desired by many. This selection bears proof of this growing trend, offering a wide variety of design solutions for today’s contemporary loft.

It has been over ten years since TASCHEN's original New York Interiors was published and while much has changed in the Big Apple since then, the city is still bristling with an exciting and eclectic mix of cutting-edge movers and shakers - a fact that is quite perfectly reflected in its interiors. New York has long been a magnet for artistic people, and since Septermber 11, the city has become less money-driven and more creative, with an unprecedented influx of graphic designers, interior designers, artists, gallerists, and collectors. Across the river from Manhattan, trendy, less-expensive Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Williamsburg offer a convenient taste of life just outside the fast lane.

Hand-picked by editor and author Angelika Taschen, this spanking new collection of interiors explores an array of homes as dizzying as the diversity of the New Yorkers themselves. Peek into the apartments of artist Terence Koh, artist and director Julian Schnabel, musician Rufus Wainwright, porn diva Vanessa del Rio, and actress Julianne Moore — among many others — to get an idea of the myriad and marvelous ways New Yorkers love to live.

Award-winning photographer Kerri McCaffety looks at the city's most innovative and iconic interiors in a quest to define the essence of the unique New Orleans style. Sumptuous fabrics, elegant architectural details, intricate collections, bold abstract art, and fresh, contemporary lines are all captured in her stunning photographs.

What makes New Orleans different from everywhere else? The answer is its history: three centuries of complex cultural influences - French, Spanish, and African - converging in a unique climate and a strategic location at the mouth of the Mississippi River. It’s an alluring but elusive mélange of sophisticated and primitive, elegant and raw in a sultry, seductive atmosphere of faded glory.

But as New Orleans recovers from the devastation wrought by Katrina, there is an infusion of contemporary energy, manifest in all dimensions - political, social, cultural, culinary, artistic. Interior design is moving toward a fresh elegance while still embracing the extravagance of the past. The grandeur of the Greek revival architecture and the drama of the live oaks are tempered by a fresh, more relaxed elegance that respects classical proportions and details but introduces a more contemporary vocabulary in furnishings and accessories.

More than forty houses and apartments are featured from all parts of the city - the French Quarter, the Warehouse District, the Garden District, and the multiple neighborhoods that comprise Uptown.

Social commentator and Vogue contributor Julia Reed’s introductory essay surveys the traditions of the city, placing its style in a cultural and historic context. Commentary from interior designers, scholars, and antiques dealers creates a rich tapestry of perspectives and opinions on a perennially fascinating place.

The patio is an outdoor space situated within a house that can have a number of uses, although in the past it served merely as a distributor of space of for ventilating and illuminating the parts furthers away from the facade with natural light. Nowadays, architets have rethought this space and have adapted it to new uses, even in regions with a cool climate and less tradition of living outdoors. The sensation of spaciousness and good lighting acquired by a home giving on to a patio, however small, is one of the reasons why the latter has become more widespread. The patio can also serve to seperate the daytime area from the night-time one, or ensure that an outdoor space can be enjoyed free from prying eyes. So, the patio has become one more room in a house, standing out from the others through its lack of roof and its primary function as a place intended for relaxtion.
