Apartment architecture has come a long way since the days when functionality took precedence over aesthetic conditions. Today, the two concepts go hand in hand. Each project in this volume goes that extra step beyond meeting basic requirements to providing qualities which add texture and beauty to daily life. As but one example: the building with entire facades of double layers of glass encasing living plants within. Photos, texts, ground plans and construction details all help provide thorough understanding of each project.

Including in-depth technical explanations and hundreds of colour photographs, this work is as attractive as it is practical. With dozens of new proposals for house design, each project is accompanied by a comprehensive analysis of each phase in the design and building processes. It also includes a breakdown of the materials and techniques used, making this a necessary volume for architects and designers.

While a spatial division between kitchen, living room and dining room was originally implemented, today and eating area is often integrated into the living area. Interior areas designed in this way are open and create large spaces, which promotes social interaction. Decisive here is the shape and size of the table, as well as the choice of lighting. If there is a smaller space available, a simple and unadorned round table combined with a round lamp suggests itself. If the table is very long , optimal lightning can be achieved by several lamps installed in a line above. To create an especially bright illuminated interior space, it is best to use materials like glass or PVC.

The entrance to a house acts as its visiting card. Its conception has changed enormously over the years, as has its social uses, and the space that was once considered indispensable for receiving guests and keeping the house away form view on first contact - whether out of a desire to preserve privacy or a belief that it was bad taste to put living space on display - has changed to such an extent that it is on the verge of disappearing from many homes. In fact, in many cases the entrance is the axis around which the space will be used to greater advantage and the layout of the various areas will follow a logical order; in contrast, a misguided placement results in an erroneous starting point for a residential project. So, we are devoting these 192 pages to solutions for entrances, of various shapes and styles, belonging to different types of homes from all over the world, drawn up by a wide range of architects.

Over the course of time designers have managed to optimise fireplaces to avoid problems such as smoke and smells. However, heating the home is no longer the sole aim of chimneys and heaters. They create cosy, warm atmospheres, allowing us to enjoy the magnetism of their flames. This book presents designs of both wood and gas fuelled chimenys and heaters, made from a variety of materials and original designs.
