This volume features some of the best examples of prefabricated residential architecture. With numerous examples from recent times, it is evidence of a growing trend in the construction industry which, through harnessing the benefits of prefabricated buildings, has been able to achieve ever greater control over building processes while reducing costs and the impact of construction on the environment. Gone is the statement that prefabricated homes are more impersonal and less attractive than their brick and mortar counterparts. With over 500 illustrations, plans and elevations, the book presents the most effective solutions in contemporary prefabricated architecture, demonstrating that construction which is more economical and ecological is possible.

This book presents 25 international examples of prefabricated architecture in a contemporary context. This book shows around 25 international houses that are based on modular and prefabrication systems. All of them have ecological advantages in comparison to standard construction systems, since they represent a more effective use of resources and a reduction of construction time and therewith costs. All houses are built in factories, carried by road and assembled on site. Thus, building materials can be used more economically and very few refuse is produced during construction. Due to the actual spread of technologies and construction typologies, the international prefabrication industry can deliver up-to-date houses, aesthetically modern, and with an average rank of prizes from very cheap solutions to more exclusive ones, depending on the main material used (wood, steel, galvanised aluminum and concrete).

Prefabulous and Sustainable dispels the negative myths associated with prefab homes and shows the reader how beautiful and remarkably green prefab homes are.

In this guide to prefab home-building author Sheri Koones, demystifies the prefabricated house by using 25 unique homes to showcase how factory-built homes are greener, more efficient, sturdier, and more cost-effective than site-built homes. The book is divided into 3 categories - green, greener, greenest - and the homes featured vary in style, design, type of construction, and size. All of the homes included in Prefabulous and Sustainable have been customized to create a level of sustainability beyond the inherent qualities of prefab.

Written in an easy to understand and approachable style, author Sheri Koones walks the readers through each of the homes, explaining the materials, strategies, and systems used to create a sustainable living environment. Photographs, captions, floor plans, and sidebars illustrate to readers that green living is not as complicated as one might think, and attainable for everyone. Also included is a resource guide, making this book a hand-on guide for homebuilders.

A dozen aristocratic French families invite readers to experience their elegant lifestyle, from the royal stag hunting tradition of Louis XI and Louis XIII at the Château de Champchevrier to Hubert de Givenchys elegant Parisian townhouse imbued with grandeur and comfort in the style of Napolean III.

The featured houses, illustrated with specially commissioned photography, represent key periods of French decoration. The exquisite Renaissance architecture of Château dAnet and its sumptuous interiors with great fireplaces, silk upholstered sofas, and soft lighting exude the notorious ardor between Henri II and Diane de Poitiers.

Citizens in retirement age are becoming an ever greater but also more active part of society.

Architects and designers have discovered that this requires a new way of thinking and detected nursing homes and senior citizens’ residences as a new area of professional interest. They apply creative concepts and intricate designs to increase the comfort and quality of life for the elderly.

The projects presented in this volume are outstanding examples of architectural and interior design solutions that meet the complex and special needs of senior citizens. It presents newly constructed and converted buildings that contradict the common perception of "old folks' homes". They show that it is possible to reconcile nursing and medical requirements with an attractive design, skillfully combining functionality and aesthetics.

Richard Meier is one of the most renowned architects working today. His works are characterized by their rationalism, their rather detached purity, and their large expanses of reticulated forms masterfully articulating voids and solids. An architect obsessed with visual effects, Meier is known for such large-scale projects as the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

This oversize book, however, concentrates solely on Meier's residential works. Fourteen houses are featured through dramatic colour photos of both interior and exterior side by side with drawings, plans, and reflections of both the architect and his clients. A bibliography and a chronology of all of Meier's residential projects, both built and unbuilt, complete this visually stunning volume.

This oversized book presents 14 built American houses by one of the world's most influential and widely emulated architects. New colour interior and exterior photography, as well as drawings, plans, clients' personal reflections, and the architect's insight, accompany each house. With a chronology of all of Meier's built and unbuilt residential projects, this is a most beautiful and valuable reference for admirers of his work.

Robert A. M. Stern is dedicated to the synthesis of tradition and innovation. In more than thirty-five years of practice, he has produced a wide range of building types with a variety of stylistic influences, all inspired by the great legacy of American architecture. His firm, Robert A. M. Stern Architects, was first recognized for its distinguished houses, and residential design remains the cornerstone of the practice. This beautifully illustrated monograph - a companion to the best-selling Robert A. M. Stern: Houses - presents twenty-six of the firm's most memorable houses.

Located in diverse settings across North America - from a valley in Colorado with sweeping views of the Aspen mountains to a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound to an island off the coast of British Columbia - these remarkable houses reveal the architect's emphasis on the importance of context and his dedication to exploring the nature of space. Each house invokes the vernacular architectural heritage particular to its region while gracefully reflecting its unique natural surroundings. Whether they are Shingle Style "cottages" by the sea, colonial Georgian country estates, or elegant Regency designs, Stern's houses are unique both for their timelessness and their ability to evoke a conversation with the past - a dialogue he believes lies at the heart of architecture.

Irish houses have a character and personality quite different from that found anywhere else. Quixotic, often whimsical and definitely quirky, they provide a sanctuary from the Irish climate, which is frequently grey, cold and damp. No wonder, therefore, that over the centuries Irelands domestic architecture and interior design has developed a distinctive personality in which colour and vivacity are highly prized.

Romantic Irish Homes presents 15 of the finest examples of these traits, each one of them distinctive and yet sharing the same native spirit. From vast ancient castles through sturdy Georgian manors to small farmhouses, the majority of them never previously photographed, the homes featured here offer a unique insight into the Irish temperament and an exploration of a style of decoration that, while adapted to meet 21st century demands, still retains an historic integrit.

Since streets become increasingly crowded, living on the top of a building promises privacy and distance. Rooftops have become the symbol of a new lifestyle - an extension and exclusive enjoyment of an area traditionally unused: the architectural crown of a building has been transformed into a new area for work or living. Architects, designers and town planners have seen in this final section of a building their last chance to let their fantasies run free and to dramatically shape the cities' skylines with extensions, attics and unique tops. This volume delivers a very close insight in the divers possibilities of the roof design of residential, corporative and other buildings. About 200 projects present the different types of roofs: Pitched roofs, flat roofs with planting vegetation, roof garden as a pool area or further floor space. An index with the contact dates of the designers is enclosed.
