To some extent, it is from museums that we learn about the past and present of a city. A museum is a materialised history; there, with the historical relics on display, we have dialogues with history. As we have realised that a museum would be a useful tool for the publicity of a city, museums have become projects that architects and designers most long for. In the book we selected 50 world-top museums, including history museums, art museums, science museums, etc. Each project is illustrated with pictures, plans and a brief introduction. While appreciating the museums, readers would learn more about the distinguished concepts and the distinct features of them.

In this book, the world’s most exciting new museums are shown to be as inspiring as the works they display.

The twenty-first century has seen a boom in museum construction, both in new buildings and renovations or additions to existing ones. Nearly thirty museums are given close inspection in this generously illustrated volume. Each entry includes a discussion of the building’s cultural and geographic environment, complemented by color photographs, sketches and architectural plans. The book encompasses four continents and highlights the designs of Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Steven Holl, Zaha Hadid, Mario Botta, David Chipperfield, Tadao Ando, Yoshio Taniguchi and Daniel Libeskind. In addition, the authors provide thoughtful commentary on the relationship between architecture and the fine arts and an assessment of museum functionality in modern times.

Much of modern architecture has been conceived using glass to create minimal structures, to extol the notion of lightweight construction solutions and to allow maximum daylight into buildings. However, it is only in the last 15 years that the full potential of glass architecture has been realised. Brent Richards demonstrates that a new aesthetic in glass architecture has arrived, one that emphasizes opacity, depth, discovery, mystery and shadow and uses glass to generate a multi-sensory experience. The book begins with an introduction that traces the history of the key moments of glass in architecture and describes developments in glass technology over the last 20 years. It goes on to feature 25 recent examples of glass architecture, with specially commissioned colour photographs by the renowned architectural photographer Dennis Gilbert. It includes the work of such well known names as Steven Holl, Toyo Ito and Herzog & de Meuron.

Since the opening in 1997 of the Guggenheim Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry, museum architecture has enjoyed worldwide attention on an unprecedented scale. That single watershed project demonstrated to municipalities that architecture has the power to transform the image of an entire city, thus making the turn of the twenty-first century the unofficial age of the museum building.

New Museums examines the boom in high-design museum projects in detail, beginning with the Guggenheim Bilbao’s groundbreaking role in the development of contemporary museum architecture. It continues with a beautifully illustrated tour of 30 examples of the most innovative and exciting museum architecture around the world, including Tadao Ando’s Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth, Zaha Hadid’s Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Renzo Piano’s Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, and many others.

School buildings, whether new build, refurbishment, renovation or expansion raise issues with the natural environment, urbanisation and urban life, which in turn mean new priorities and responsibilities for professionals designing schools. Modern schools are no longer isolated from their neighbours in a city, but must be an organic part of urban life. Modern school designs showcase new priorities, quality-control is always first, sustainability is in and schools are the new centre of community residents' life. We selected 42 school designs by world architects and interior designers, including primary and secondary schools and professional training schools.

Tents have been prized for centuries for their lightness, mobility, small footprint and structural elegance. New tents offer innovative and significant solutions to age-old problems. With the demand on architects to touch the earth lightly, together with a cross-disciplinary interest in technotextiles, membrane structures are assuming new prominence and pleasing forms.

This wide-ranging international survey looks at the exciting possibilities of contemporary tensile building and the most interesting membrane structures created in recent years.

Includes:
• Architectural and cultural history of the tent
• Thirty recent projects grouped by theme, such as atrium covers and fabric walls, ring roofs and convertibles, small peaks, large waves
• Accessible text descriptions, photographs and line drawings.

"New Transport Architecture" is broken down into thematic chapters according to transport type. Within each chapter, detailed case studies (36 in total) profile each travel hub, enabling a thorough understanding from overall scheme right down to the details.

Illustrations of each project range from professional technical drawings and plans, through shots of the work in progress, to stunning shots of the finished structure. In addition, the author, architectural authority Will Jones, invites five internationally acclaimed thinkers from the fields of architecture and architectural theory to consider themes pertinent to every transport type - from the importance of retail to the need for flexibility and future expansion.

The foreword is also provided by Ivan Harbour - architect and partner with Richard Rogers Partnership. Together, case studies and essays from the most complete exploration of the travel hub ever published.

Off the Grid confronts the ecological and cultural problems associated with the way we get and use energy, and explains how it is possible to live in a beautifully designed home using much less--no matter where your home is located. Our homes are connected by a nearly invisible grid of infrastructure that binds us together. It is a system of electrical poles, wire, substations, hydroelectric dams, telecommunication towers, and water extraction and sewage systems. From within this system we work, play, and raise families. We have also created one of the greatest environmental challenges known to modern civilization. The signs of our impact upon the world can be recognized in the reports of environmental changes occurring across the earth, and they can also be seen in the growing failures of the energy grids across the world as the current system is stressed beyond its capacity. Technologies that can be used to live off the grid (geothermal energy use, wind turbines, photovoltaic arrays, micro hydropower, rainwater collection and reclamation, and more) are explained as author Lori Ryker shows how to choose and incorporate these sources according to geography and climate. Off the Grid beautifully illustrates that this is not just a concept for rural living; examples of homes that are "off the grid" to varying degrees are found in New York City; Ontario, Canada; Stuttgart, Germany; Belmont, California; Pipe Creek, Texas; Clyde Park, Montana; Twin Lakes, Minnesota; Laytonville, California; Venice, California; and New South Wales, Australia. Off the Grid shows how we can take responsibility for our future choices and conveniences now, and proves that off-the-grid living is a concept that can be easily understood and adopted by everyone, regardless of where you live or how much money you make.
