Urban pilot projects from the informal city

Urban-Think Tank (U-TT), an interdisciplinary design practice emerging from the turbulent political environment of Chávez-era Caracas, has pursued projects in Latin America, Europe, and Africa for almost twenty years. Their diverse work positioned the firm at the forefront of a social turn in architecture in the late 1990s, with concrete urban interventions encouraging social cohesion in the megacities of the Global South and Europe’s evolving metropoles. U-TT has also produced numerous media projects that harness film, theater, exhibitions, and print to create new discursive spaces and question how our cities are shaped, and for whom. Most notable is its work on the squatted skyscraper for which the firm shared the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2012. This book looks forward as well as back, imagining new spaces for a hyper-urbanized world and gaining insight from informal settlements, spatial play, and artistic interventions in public space.

Time magazine noted that Seaside "could be the most astonishing design achievement of its era…." Visions of Seaside is the most comprehensive book on the history and development of the nation’s first and most influential New Urbanist town. The book chronicles the thirty-year history of the evolution and development of Seaside, Florida, its global influence on town planning, and the resurgence of place-making in the built environment. Through a rich repository of historical materials and writings, the book chronicles numerous architectural and planning schemes, and outlines a blueprint for moving forward over the next twenty-five to fifty years. Among the many contributors are Deborah Berke, Andrés Duany, Steven Holl, Léon Krier, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Aldo Rossi, and Robert A. M. Stern.

About the Authors:

Dhiru A. Thadani is an architect and urbanist who has worked on projects in Asia, Europe, and North and Central America and now serves as urban design consultant to several U.S. and international cities. He is the author of several books. Vincent Scully is Yale University’s Sterling Professor Emeritus of the History of Art and Architecture, author of numerous books, and recipient of the National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artists and art patrons. Paul Goldberger is a Pulitzer Prize–winning architecture critic and a contributing editor at Vanity Fair. He is the author of more than ten books and coauthor of many others.

Разработав свой собственный стиль и язык в искусстве, Константинов занимает особое место на современной художественной сцене. Его грандиозные произведения требуют нового пространственного опыта и культурно-исторического контекста, расширяя географию современного русского искусства. Уникальная интегрированность его работ в окружающую среду ставит их на самую границу между изобразительным искусством и архитектурой. Трудно представить собранные в книге произведения в контексте какой­либо выставки, настолько они самодостаточны. The revitalization of Miami's South Beach Art Deco district is one of architecture and urban design's great success stories.
