Drag celebrates the fabulous current and historical influence of drag, and its talented and inspiring performers.

Since man first walked the Earth...in heels, no other art form has wielded as unique an influence on pop culture as Drag. Drag artists have now sashayed their way to snatch the crowns as the Queens of mainstream entertainment.

Through informative and witty essays chronicling over 100 years of drag, readers will embark on a Priscilla-like journey through pop culture, from television shows like The Milton Berle Show, Bosom Buddies, and RuPaul's Drag Race, films like Some Like It Hot, To Wong Foo..., and Tootsie, and Broadway shows like Hedwig and the Angry Inch, La Cage aux Folles, and Kinky Boots.

With stops in cities around the globe, and packed with interviews and commentaries on the dramas, joys, and love that "make-up" a life in wigs and heels, Drag features contributions from today's most groundbreaking and popular artists, including Bianca del Rio, Miss Coco Peru, Hedda Lettuce, Lypsinka, and Varla Jean Merman, as well as notable performers as Harvey Fierstein and Charles Busch. It includes more than 100 photos--many from performers' personal collections, and a comprehensive timeline of drag "herstory."

Fabric For Fashion: The Complete Guide is the only book specifically for fashion designers to explain the behaviour and properties of different fabrics. Fashion design is largely determined by how the fabrics work, move, feel and look. The most successful fashion designers are those who understand their materials, and who match design skills with technical knowledge.

This book bridges that gap by providing a mix of practical information and industry vocabulary, visually examining generic fabric types, discussing the characteristics of fabrics and showing how to exploit materials to push the boundaries of design.

With stunning colour photographs that show how fashion designers, both past and present, have worked with fabrics, the book’s prime objective is to stimulate creative exploration of the relationship of fabrics to fashion.

Caroline Evans

Видавництво: Yale University Press

Experimental fashion has a dark side, a preoccupation with representations of death, trauma, alienation and decay. This seminal publication offers an unexpected discussion of cutting-edge fashion in the 1990s, exploring what its disturbing themes tell us about consumer culture and contemporary anxieties. Caroline Evans analyses the work of innovative designers, the images of fashion photographers and the spectacular fashion shows that developed in the final decade of the twentieth century to arrive at a new understanding of fashion’s dark side and what it signifies.

Fashion at the Edge considers a range of ground-breaking fashion in unprecedented depth and detail, including the work of such designers as John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan and Viktor & Rolf, and photographers such as Steven Meisel, Nick Knight and Juergen Teller.

Drawing on diverse perspectives from Marx to Walter Benjamin, Evans shows that fashion stands at the very centre of the contemporary, and that it voices some of Western culture’s deepest concerns.

About the Author:

Caroline Evans is professor emerita at Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts London).

_____________

From the Introduction of Fashion Design

Fashion design is often a misunderstood discipline. The public perception of this field commonly focuses on extolling the instinctive creative abilities of genius designers, and intentionally minimizes the discussion of the diligent process that takes place behind the scenes. This book was developed specifically to guide the reader through this exciting, yet relatively obscure, subject.

Fashion designers at all levels of the industry face the challenging task of blending business and art toward the creation of relevant, commercially viable, and creatively exciting products every season. Additionally, all participants in the fashion industry, be they visual merchandisers, photographers, stylists, pattern-makers or buyers, benefit greatly from complete understanding of the creative process employed by designers. Fashion brands, after all, differentiate themselves primarily by how and why they create product, and by the artistic vision they offer, not simply by the items produced. To fully comprehend how fashion products are generated demands a thorough awareness of a multitude of sectors, which are best grouped in three main categories: context, concept, and presentation.

About the Author:

Denis Antoine is Professor of Fashion at Savannah College of Art and Design and co-author of Classic Tailoring Techniques for Menswear 2e, the authority on classic tailoring. He studied at London College of Fashion (BA Hons) and the Royal College of Art (MA RCA).
