In 1972, David Bowie released his groundbreaking album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. With it landed Bowie’s Stardust alter ego: a glitter-clad, mascara-eyed, sexually ambiguous persona who kicked down the boundaries between male and female, straight and gay, fact and fiction into one shifting and sparkling phenomenon of ’70s self-expression. Together, Ziggy the album and Ziggy the stage spectacular propelled the softly spoken Londoner into one of the world’s biggest stars.

A key passenger on this glam trip into the stratosphere was fellow Londoner and photographer Mick Rock. Rock bonded with Bowie artistically and personally, immersed himself in the singer’s inner circle, and, between 1972 and 1973, worked as the singer’s photographer and videographer.

This collection, featuring around 50 percent previously unpublished images, brings together spectacular stage shots, iconic photo shoots, as well as intimate backstage portraits. With a lenticular cover of different headshots, it celebrates Bowie’s fearless experimentation and reinvention, while offering privileged access to the many facets of his personality and fame. Through the aloof and approachable, the playful and serious, the candid and the contrived, the result is a passionate tribute to a brilliant and inspirational artist whose creative vision will never be forgotten.

This is the first monograph to be published in the West on the work of Mika Ninagawa, one of Japan’s most celebrated photographers.

Lauded in Japan as an art and fashion photographer, the assertion on Mika Ninagawa’s official website of being "Japan’s most popular photographer" is no idle boast. She is certainly the most prolific. Formally represented by Tomio Koyama’s influential gallery, Ninagawa’s images are widely exhibited in Japan and abroad. She has had key installations at Colette in Paris and Arndt and Partner in Berlin and is a frequent participant at Art Basel Miami. She received the prestigious Kimura Ihei Award in 2001.

Modernist Photography reexamines the classic period of twentieth-century photography using new critical approaches to consider five recurrent visual themes during the years 1915 to 1945. These themes cut across such stylistic movements as Pictorialism, Surrealism, and the New Vision, and include the transformation of objects, experimental images of the body, visions of the city, the industrialization of the countryside, and experimental directions in poster design and typography. This thematic approach fosters new perspectives on such key photographers as Bernice Abbott, Brassaï, Walker Evans, Raoul Hausmann. Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks, and Man Ray and emphasizes the interactions between European and American practitioners. The catalogue will include chapters on each of the five themes by ICP curators Christopher Phillips and Vanessa Rocco. It is based on a selection of seventy works from the Daniel Cowin Collection, a recent donation to the International Center of Photography.
