Ziggy Marley
ID: 14076
Видавництво: Rizzoli

In honor of Bob Marley's seventy-fifth birthday, this glorious oversize book collects more than 150 photographs that celebrate the life and influence of the forefather of reggae and one of the greatest musical and sociopolitical icons of twentieth-century pop culture.

Drawing exclusively on photos in the Marley family archives, the book mixes the iconic and the intimate, bringing together striking images of Marley as a performer onstage with unseen glimpses into his creative process in and out of the studio and his family life in Jamaica. Making the most of its oversize pages, the book is designed as a monument to his influence.

Focusing on the last decade of his life--the period of his greatest worldwide fame -- and with excerpts from unpublished interviews and prophetic quotes alongside the images, this is a definitive portrait of one of the great artists of the twentieth century made by those who knew him best.

About the Author:

An eight-time Grammy winner, Emmy winner, author, philanthropist, and reggae icon, Ziggy Marley has released thirteen albums to much critical acclaim. His immersion in music came early at the age of ten, when he sat in on recording sessions with his father, and he has now realized his father's lifelong dream of owning his master recordings and publishing intellectual property. He lives and works in Los Angeles.

What is dance? It is motion. What is Motion? The expression of a sensation.

What is Sensation? The reaction in the human body produced by an impression or idea perceived by the mind.

Loïe Fuller was one of the leading and most influential figures of the twentieth-century art scene. Her persona, choreographies and technical innovations have exerted a strong influence on the conceptual theories and achievements of choreographers, producers, theater and film directors, painters, sculptors, architects, and other performance artists of our times. Loïe Fuller played a decisive role in the Art Nouveau movement, she was the muse that inspired the Electricity Pavilion in 1900, and she orchestrated the first shows, in the contemporary sense of the word, in France. Through a number of photographs, paintings, sculptures and documents, this volume attempts to unravel the various strands of her extravagant life, to chart her dedication to the performance arts and to demonstrate her incredible technical inventiveness ― in short, to provide an insight into one of the most attractive and influential figures of contemporary creation.

_____________

Loïe Fuller, born Marie Louise Fuller (Fullersburg, Illinois, 1862–Paris, 1928), was a dancer, choreographer, lighting technician, researcher, inventor of special stage effects, art curator, filmmaker, member of the French Astronomical Society and businesswoman. Moreover, from a very young age she was also a living legend; she was hailed as the muse of Art Nouveau and in 1900 had her own pavilion, designed by Henri Sauvage, at one of the most important events of the day: the World’s Fair in Paris.

Admired by Stéphane Mallarmé, Auguste Rodin, Arthur Symons, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Koloman Moser, Pierre Roche, Raoul Larche, Théodore Rivière, Jules Chéret, Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla and Anton Pevsner, among many others, Fuller exercised an enormous influence on the artists of her day.

Legendary actress Brigitte Bardot led fashion revolutions throughout her career; this retrospective includes BB’s comments on her iconic style in a rare, intimate interview.

Brigitte Bardot is a style icon whose legacy has undeniably shaped the face of fashion as we know it. Discovered by a magazine editor at only 14 years old, she found fame and admiration on the big screen in the 1950s, and then became the fiery sex symbol of the groovy and liberated 1960s. Over the course of her career, all of the great French designers ― including Christian Dior, Pierre Balmain, and Pierre Cardin ― outfitted Bardot on and off screen. In photographs that capture her attending prestigious receptions or on glamorous visits to the United States, in fashion shoots and on film sets, this volume illustrates all the key looks that BB wore and brought to the international spotlight as she invented and edited her own highly imitated style. In an extensive ― and extremely rare ― interview, accompanied by her personal comments on the photos, Bardot explains the context of the often vanguard fashions she wore, making headlines wherever she went.

Evoking French style and the glamor of St. Tropez, her legacy endures ― from ballerina slippers with sweeping skirts to figure-hugging knitwear, gingham fabrics and gypsy dresses, kohl eyeliner and tousled hair.

Let’s Get It On. Behind the scenes of the 1970s music explosion with Bruce W. Talamon

Talamon saw it all during the golden age of soul, R&B, and funk. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, this young African American photographer from Los Angeles found himself backstage with an all-access pass to the heart of the music scene. He caught his first big break landing a position as a staff photographer at SOUL Newspaper in LA in the early 1970s, just as soul, R&B, and funk were becoming part of the mainstream. He captured the rehearsals and sound checks, recording sessions and costume fittings, the quiet reflective moments and life on the road, and, of course, the wild photo shoots and memorable performances. These photographs define an era famed for its glamour, fabulous fashions, and utter devotion to the groove.

Including close to 300 photographs from 1972 to 1982, the extensive Talamon archives are presented in full detail for the first time. Whether you’re a diehard soul fan or a thrilled newcomer to the aesthetic magic of the 1970s, the collection exudes the infectious spirit of an exuberant age. Featuring icons such as Earth, Wind & Fire; Marvin Gaye; Diana Ross; Parliament-Funkadelic; Al Green; Gil Scott-Heron; James Brown; Barry White; Rick James; Aretha Franklin; the Jackson Five; Donna Summer; and Chaka Khan and many others; there are also several stops at the legendary Soul Train studios. Talamon documented a visual period in black music that lasted way past the midnight hour and will never come again.

The photography book to mark the 100th birthday of literature’s "enfant terrible"

Charles Bukowski, the "dirty old man" of American literature whose poems and prose are closely interwoven with his life – how does one go about portraying a person like that? In 1985, the young photographer Abe Frajndlich took on this challenge. We can say this much: it was not a job that could be accomplished in one shot. The Shooting presents a photographer’s attempt to zero in on a legend.

“That face!” Glenn Esterly exclaims in his essay “The Pock-marked Poetry of Charles Bukowski” included in this volume. Everything fascinating about this monumental author is concentrated in his “look”, as impressively demonstrated by the photographs of Abe Frajndlich, many of them previously unpublished. Portraying Bukowski in colour and black and white, he gained the writer’s confidence to the point that he was eventually invited to the wedding of Bukowski and Linda Lee Beighle. Telling the story of this meeting, the publication reproduces the various portrait series, culminating in the photographs of the wedding.

Colin Westerbeck and Joel Meyerowitz

Видавництво: Laurence King Publishing

In this book, the authors explore and discuss the development of one of the most interesting and dynamic of photographic genres.

Hailed as a landmark work when it was first published in 1994, Bystander is widely regarded by street photographers as the ‘bible’ of street photography. It covers an incredible array of talent, from the unknowns of the late 19th century to the acknowledged masters of the 20th, such as Atget, Stieglitz, Strand, Cartier-Bresson, Brassai, Kertesz, Frank, Arbus, Winogrand and Levitt to name just a few.

In this new and fully revised edition, the story of street photography is brought up to date with a re-evaluation of some historical material, the inclusion of more contemporary photographers and a discussion of the ongoing rise of digital photography.

About the Authors:

Formerly a Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago and Director of the California Museum of Photography at the University of California, Riverside, Colin Westerbeck has also taught the history of photography at the University of Southern California and, currently, UCLA. He is internationally acknowledged as the foremost expert on street photography.

Joel Meyerowitz started making spontaneous color photographs on the streets of New York in 1962 with friends such as Tony Ray-Jones and Garry Winogrand. He has since become known as one of the most important street photographers of his generation. Instrumental in changing attitudes towards color photography in the 1970s, he is known as a pioneer, an important innovator, and a highly influential teacher.

The definitive book on Karl Lagerfeld’s pioneering and irreverent campaigns for Chanel, as photographed by the designer himself

When Karl Lagerfeld was named at the helm of the fashion house in 1983, he set out to radically shake up and update its image – not only through bold collections but also, from 1987 onwards, by choosing to shoot the house’s campaigns himself, a move that was unprecedented for a fashion designer.

Darmon Richter

Видавництво: Fuel

In Chernobyl: A Stalkers’ Guide, researcher Darmon Richter journeys into the contemporary Exclusion Zone, venturing deeper than any previously published account. While thousands of foreign visitors congregate around a handful of curated sites, beyond the tourist hotspots lies a wild and mysterious land the size of a small country. In the forests of Chernobyl, historic village settlements and Soviet-era utopianism have lain abandoned since the time of the disaster – overshadowed by vast, unearthly mega-structures designed to win the Cold War.

Richter combines photographs of discoveries made during his numerous visits to the Zone with the voices of those who witnessed history – engineers, scientists, police and evacuees. He explores evacuated regions in both Ukraine and Belarus, finding forgotten ghost towns and Soviet monuments lost deep in irradiated forests. He gains exclusive access inside the most secure areas of the power plant itself, and joins the ‘stalkers’ of Chernobyl as he sets out on a high-stakes illegal hike to the heart of the Exclusion Zone.

Charles Fréger, Ishmael Reed

Charles Fréger explores the masks, costumes and characters created by the descendants of Africans and indigenous peoples in the Americas

All across the Americas, from the 16th century onwards, enslaved Africans escaped their captors and struck out on their own. These runaways, having found their freedom, established their own communities or joined with indigenous peoples to forge new identities.

Cimarron, borrowing a Spanish-American term for these fugitive former slaves, is a new series of photographic portraits of their descendants. From Brazil, Colombia, the Caribbean islands and Central America, as far as the southern USA, elaborate masquerades are staged that celebrate and keep alive the memory of African slaves and their descendants. Stock characters are portrayed in costume, or in grotesque or satirical representations. A huge variety of African tribal dress, wild ritual regalia and shimmering Mardi Gras outfits feature in breathtaking succession. Vividly coloured silks and cottons combine with woven fibres, leaves, feathers, and bodypaint; props include emblems of slavery and slavemasters – ropes, sticks, guns and machetes. These photographs record real people whose collective sense of memory, folk history and imagination dramatically challenges our expectations.

Charles Fréger’s work has established a large and growing following among connoisseurs of contemporary photography, defining a new genre of documentary portraiture that extends and deepens our sense of the human past and the present.

Table of Contents:

Introduction • The Photographs • Cimarron: Slavery, Freedom and Ritual Masquerade, Krystel Gualde • Description of characters and groups, Ana Maria Ruiz

Christian Tagliavini
ID: 15876
Видавництво: teNeues

"Circesque" is a celebration of an idea Christian Tagliavini had in 2008 and resulted in his photographic series of the same title produced in 2019. Exploring the world of the circus, this specially crafted book is a unique invitation for the reader to form their own stories through exquisitely detailed costumes, unexpected props, and a glimpse of the people behind the greasepaint and powder.

"Circesque", explores the untold lives of circus folk. Stripped of the tired clichés of circus life, these mise-en-scène portraits reveal the human behind the archetype. The images betray the protagonists’ innermost feelings as they mount the platform, put themselves on the line, and take the risk: all under the watchful eye of their audience. Acrobats. Trapezists. High-wire performers. Escape artists. Tattooed ladies. Jugglers. Nature-defying contortionists. All present and accounted for as in any traditional Big Top. But a closer look reveals some unusual details.

After the eponymous first book by artist Christian Tagliavini, which was also published by teNeues in 2018, the second to his latest photo series Circesque is now published. The exceptional artist, whose art uniquely combines craft, photography and stage design, dedicates himself here to the actors of the circus world. Sometimes enigmatic, sometimes touching, always rich in detail and stylistically driven to the extreme, these latest works of the Swiss fascinate his viewers anew.

 About the Author:

Christian Tagliavini was born in 1971 and grew up in Italy and Switzerland. Christian Tagliavini studied graphic design and worked as an architect and graphic artist before he focused on photographic art in 2000. His artistic development shaped his complex relationship with the art form. His works are not only pictures but designed narratives for which Christian Tagliavini produces all visible components himself: ranging from the interior of the set to the clothing of the protagonists. He regards himself as photographic craftsman with these unique compositions. His highly praised series 1503 (2010), Carte (2012), Voyages Extraordinaires (2015), 1406 (2017), and Circesque (2019/20) have been part of numerous international exhibitions and art fairs.
