Freikörperkultur. An evocative new series from Mario Testino

Mario Testino’s Undressed removes various layers. Coinciding with an exhibition conceived exclusively for the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, this intimate series explores the notion of undressing in photography as much as it lays Testino’s archive bare, probing beyond the photographer’s established public image to reveal a deeper understanding of his practice and oeuvre.

The 50 featured photographs center on the naked body, alternately exploring and pushing the traditions and boundaries between sex, gender identity, and fashion. Honoring the influence of Helmut Newton, the images become abstracted body landscapes, the protagonists appearing as mere form, a torso, even a statue.

A special highlight are previously unseen photographs shot in the Testino studio, in which an exuberant atmosphere intermingles with the implicit frisson of nudity and where playfully amorous dynamics never slip into the obscene or pornographic.

Testino’s lineup ranges from supermodel protagonists, such as Kate Moss and Amber Valletta, to anonymous, androgynous men; from individual portraits to group photos. We see many intimate moments, some caught candidly, some consciously orchestrated, such as a young man shaving a woman’s upper pubic hair in a luxurious bathroom. Following in the tradition of SIR, many of the images may be seen to redefine masculine paradigms in the same way that Newton created his own brand of female beauty.

As emotions, aesthetics, and bodies meet, Testino grants new insight into his world-famous work. The images are accompanied by an introduction from curator Matthias Harder, a candid conversation piece with Carine Roitfeld, as well as an essay from psychiatrist and psychologist Manfred Spitzer who offers a neuroscientific perspective on our visual perception of bodies and beauty.

Marrigje de Maar (*1944 in The Hague) creates photographs of the ephemeral world of the home, of being rooted. She regards the interior itself as a portrait of identity. The trained sociologist seeks out those striking and magical places where families have come together for generations - where life has “worn itself into” a house. Very important is her unusual treatment of light: her photographs are veritable masterpieces of chiaroscuro.

After five trips to China, a substantial body of work has taken shape. While vast areas of housing in many Chinese communes were being demolished in order to make way for the modern age and its contemporary lifestyle and attitudes, de Maar found a surprising diversity of types and uses of classical living spaces. Never before has the worn and intimate character of household life in China, in all its culturally hybrid forms, been revealed in such a direct manner.

Martin Munkacsi set great store by the fact that he was the best-paid photographer of his time. Indisputably one of the most significant photographers of the 20th century, he shaped the beginnings of modern photojournalism.

Munkacsi’s work reveals a tense, technology-obsessed, glamorous and contradictory epoch. He published his first sports photos in 1921, and went on to work for Berlin Illustrirte Zeitung, Uhu, Die Dame, Vu and other international publications. By the time he emigrated to the USA in 1934, he had revolutionized fashion photography. He worked for Harper’s Bazaar, published works in LIFE to great acclaim, and photographed the influential series ‘How Americans Live’ for Ladies’ Home Journal.

Munkacsi combined journalistic accuracy with a highly formal aesthetic, inspiring Henri Cartier-Bresson to take up the art.

Munkacsi’s work was scattered throughout the world, but this volume brings together for the first time images from all Munkacsi’s artistic phases, including several photographs and bodies of work never seen since their magazine publication.

1999 the international recognized fashion photographer Jochen Arndt met MASAKO, a (half-) Japanese woman at a “GoSee” in Cologne. A liaison of a special kind developed between them – a platonic “amour fou” between a model and a photographer. Arnold Newman was one of the most productive, creative and successful portrait photographers of the twentieth century.

Mert Alas, born in Turkey, and Marcus Piggott, born in Wales, met in 1994, at a party on a pier in Hastings, England. Piggott asked Alas for a light, the pair got talking, and rapidly discovered they had plenty in common, not least a love of fashion.
