Since the first time a graphic was hand-drawn onto a board, there has been a deep-rooted connection between skateboarding and art. The culture of skating is a very creative and visual one, with by-products such as board graphics, videos, stickers, magazines and clothing. As more skater-artists emerge, skateboard magazines feature more artwork in their pages, and there are an increasing number of exhibitions focusing on skater art. Bringing together the finest artwork produced by skateboarders around the world, this second volume of skater-art follows on the successful first book, Concrete to Canvas. Each artist's work is highly individual and distinctive, and there is a huge variety in genre, style, method, medium, subject matter, inspiration and influence. The work featured includes digital art, street art, fine art, paintings, drawings, doodles, illustration and installation.

Gala Dinner. Salvador Dalí’s surrealist cookbook

Ever heard of surrealist fine dining? This must-have reprint of Les diners de Gala reveals the exotic flavours and elaborate imaginings behind the legendary dinner parties of Salvador and Gala Dalí. With recipes from such leading Paris restaurants as La Tour d’Argent and Maxim’s, a special section on aphrodisia, and bespoke illustrations from Dalí himself, this book is at once an artwork, a practical cookbook, and a delicious morsel of multisensory pleasure.

Les diners de Gala is uniquely devoted to the pleasures of taste … If you are a disciple of one of those calorie-counters who turn the joys of eating into a form of punishment, close this book at once; it is too lively, too aggressive, and far too impertinent for you.”—Salvador Dalí

Food and surrealism make perfect bedfellows: sex and lobsters, collage and cannibalism, the meeting of a swan and a toothbrush on a pastry case. The opulent dinner parties thrown by Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) and his wife and muse, Gala (1894–1982) were the stuff of legend. Luckily for us, Dalí published a cookbook in 1973, Les diners de Gala, which reveals some of the sensual, imaginative, and exotic elements that made up their notorious gatherings.

This reprint features all 136 recipes over 12 chapters, specially illustrated by Dalí, and organized by meal courses, including aphrodisiacs. The illustrations and recipes are accompanied by Dalí’s extravagant musings on subjects such as dinner conversation: “The jaw is our best tool to grasp philosophical knowledge.”

All these rich recipes can be cooked at home, although some will require practiced skill and a well-stocked pantry. This is cuisine of the old school, with meals by leading French chefs from such stellar Paris restaurants as Lasserre, La Tour d’Argent, Maxim’s, and Le Train Bleu.

Good taste, however voluptuous, never goes out of fashion. In making this exceptionally rare book available to a wide audience, TASCHEN brings an artwork, a practical cookbook, and a multisensory adventure to today’s kitchens.

The Magician, Death, and the Moon. Surrealism meets Symbolism in Salvador Dalí’s tarot deck

Dalí poses as the Magician, his wife Gala becomes the Empress, and the death of Julius Caesar is reinterpreted as the Ten of Swords in the artist’s extraordinary custom tarot deck. First published in a 1984 limited edition that has since long sold out, this lush box set brings back all 78 cards, each dazzling in color, along with a companion book on the making-of and practical instructions.

Legend has it that when preparing props for the James Bond film Live and Let Die, producer Albert Broccoli commissioned Surrealist maestro Salvador Dalí to create a custom deck of tarot cards. Inspired by his wife Gala, who nurtured his interest in mysticism, Dalí eagerly got to work, and continued the project of his own accord when the contractual deal fell through.

The work was published in a limited art edition in 1984 that has since long sold out, making Dalí the first renowned painter to create a completely new set of cards. Drawing on Western masterpieces from antiquity to modernity (including some of his own), Dalí seamlessly combined his knowledge of the arcane with his unmistakable wit. The result is a surreal kaleidoscope of European art history.

TASCHEN resurrects all 78 cards in a fresh celebration of Dalí’s inimitable custom set, complete with a booklet by renowned German tarot author Johannes Fiebig offering:

- an introduction to Dalí’s life and the project’s making-of
- a comprehensive explanation of each card’s composition, its meaning, and practical advice
- step-by-step instructions on how to perform readings
- a jargon-free approach simplifying tarot for the newcomer

The author:

Johannes Fiebig, born in Cologne in 1953, is one of the most successful authors on Tarot and a leading expert of the psychological interpretation of symbols and oracles. His main field of interest focuses on the use of Tarot and other symbolic languages as humanistic, psychological tools.

____________

Fascination and fear for the unknown and uncontrollable in life has been a recurring theme in art. That mystical feeling often leads to a strong internal urge to explore the depths of human souls. To artists, the uncharted territories set no boundaries for imagination. What seems to be an eerie, apocalyptic world is only a truthful reflection of actuality in these artists’ mind.

Tapping into the uncanny domain of grotesqueries and the occult, Dark Inspiration II is a rich profusion of bone-chilling art created by more than 50 artists worldwide. Childhood reveries, aged folklore and mysteries, and morbid fascination with death and mental pain juxtapose to examine mortal sins, existence and human relationships with the universe. Encompassing illustrations, sculptures, installations, photography and set design, the sensuous collection carries forward the ritual of its first volume to amass a variety of dark and mournful expressions that are at once alluring, bewildering and inspirational to peruse.

____________

Douglas Gordon is among the leading artists who emerged in British art during the 1980s and 1990s, and is considered one of the best contemporary video artists. He was born in 1966 in Glasgow, and was the winner, in 1996, of the Turner Prize, the most prestigious international contemporary arts award. He has long been interested in the double expressive registers of communication – verbal and images in movement – and has distinguished himself in terms of uncommonly sized video installations, and for his texts, which are printed on the walls of exhibition spaces in the most unusual places.

The catalogue has been produced for his first Italian solo show organised at the Mart in Rovereto, and comprises a long interview conducted by Mirta D’Argenzio, in which the British artist speaks about his most recent work, a film on the French soccer player Zinedine Zidane created with Philippe Parreno and presented in 2006 at the Cannes Film Festival. He talks about his inspiration for the film and its end. This is the catalyst to a publication taking in the artist’s complete oeuvre, which includes photography, objects and films. It is not surprising that Gordon is particularly well-known for his video works in which he reuses sequences from famous Hollywood films, such as his 24 Hour Psycho, in which the famous Hitchcock film is shown for a surreal length of time: 24 hours.

A great deal of the artist’s work explores popular culture, from films such as Rear Window, The Exorcist and Taxi Driver, and also anonymous documentaries, in order to examine perceptive processes and to interfere with viewers’ expectations. All this is set out clearly in the final extensive part of the catalogue, in which there is an overview of works ranging from installations permanently on show in cult contemporary spaces such as the Tate Modern in London and the Guggenheim, to film stills and finally the great textual work created especially for the exhibition spaces of the Mart in Rovereto.

"I draw better than most of your artists," Eric Stanton is supposed to have told Irving Klaw by way of introduction. Klaw, the entrepreneur famous for his photographs of Bettie Page, was always on the lookout for new talent and that meeting marked the start of a dazzling career for the man who now stands beside John Willie as one of the supreme masters of erotic and comic art. Stanton drew his first dozen comic stories for Klaw, who published them in installments, and from 1958 until 1966 shared a studio with Steve Ditko, the creator of Spider Man. Often Stanton did the drawings in ink and Ditko colored them in. Eric Stanton also made a name for himself as a book cover designer.

The many and varied points of view encountered in this work demonstrate the multifarious aspects of sexuality. It reveals that nothing is more natural than sexual desire; and paradoxically, nothing is less natural than the forms in which this desire expresses itself or finds satisfaction. This book invites you to take a special journey, one that will open up a vista of pleasures and desires.

This is the only book to provide a complete overview of the long history out of which today’s rich and varied gay culture has emerged. Historians from nine countries consider the evidence for same-sex relationships throughout the centuries, charting shifting attitudes towards homosexuality and the gradual emergence of a concept of self-identity.

For thousands of years, men and women have felt a desire for emotional and physical intimacy with those of their own sex. Their story, for many years forgotten, erased, ignored or rewritten, has in recent years become the focus of an extraordinary outpouring of research. Completely new avenues of inquiry have opened up and old assumptions have been challenged. Gay Life and Culture draws upon these findings to present a lively and thought-provoking account of what, until recently, could have been termed a ‘secret history’.

From ancient Greece and Rome right up to the present day with its issues of gay rights, AIDS and civil partnerships, this book also considers same-sex relationships in non-Western cultures, through history and across the globe. From homoerotic Persian poetry to tales of cross-dressing women in 18th-century Italy, from the wild, hedonistic delights of between-the-wars Berlin to concepts of a third gender in Asia and Native North America – all are discussed and recounted from memoirs, letters, archives, and works of art and literature.

Taschen 25th Anniversary Series

Post-depression America was in desperate need of a defining iconography that would lift it out of the black and white doldrums, and it came in the form of Gil Elvgren's Technicolor fantasies of the American dream. His technique - which earned him a reputation as "The Norman Rockwell of cheesecake" - involved photographing models and then painting them into gorgeous hyper-reality, with longer legs, more flamboyant hair and gravity-defying busts, and in the process making them the perfect moral-boosting eye-candy for every homesick private.
