American beauty. Painting life as it would like to be

An extraordinarily prolific artist, Norman Rockwell (1894–1978) produced some 4,000 paintings in his lifetime, not including a prodigious quantity of commissioned editorial, commercial, and advertising work. His death in 1978 was regarded the loss of a national icon, an artist who, like no other, celebrated the American Dream.

Shunning experimentation and avant-garde techniques in favour of effective composition and relatable subject matter, Rockwell created wholesome, homely paintings with accessible and aspirational appeal. Neat, quaint, and typically jovial, his subjects included classrooms, prom scenes, and Thanksgiving feasts, while his most long-standing projects were covers for The Saturday Evening Post magazine and calendars and covers for the Boys’ Life publication of the Boy Scouts of America. Imbued with optimism and patriotism, the work foregrounds classic professions such as doctor and teacher, as much as the conservative stalwarts of military, family, and faith.

Hailed by President Gerald Ford as a “beloved part of the American tradition,” Rockwell’s works reveal as much about his own talents as they do about the story of 20th-century America. This fresh artist introduction from TASCHEN brings together key paintings and illustrations from his celebratory and sunny portfolio, as well as some more unusual works tackling the underside of the United States, to understand an integrally American artist and the values and ideals that shaped his success.

Roy Lichtenstein (born 1923) became famous in the early 1960s for his deadpan recreations of popular imagery, particularly paintings based on war and romance comics. As this book demonstrates, Lichtensteins interest in quoting subjects form both high and low art has continued throughout his career, producing a fascinating and varied body of work.

Roy Lichtenstein’s painting is almost an identifiable brand today and his influence is evident in many forms of artistic expression: painting, advertising, photography, design, fashion.

Published for the extensive Milan exhibition and curated by Gianni Mercurio, this catalogue analyses – for the first time – the works he created by appropriating images from the history of modern art.

The publication comprises more than 100 works, mainly large-scale paintings, drawings and sculptures, photographs, and short films dedicated to the artist held in significant public and private international collections, including the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, the Ludwig Forum in Aachen, the Louisiana Museum in Copenhagen, the Whitney Museum and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Moderner Kunst Museum in Vienna, and the Broad Art Foundation in Los Angeles.

There is a wide range of paintings with their preparatory drawings made by Lichtenstein from the 1950s to the 1990s and inspired by Cubism, Expressionism, Futurism, 1930s Modernism, minimalist abstraction, Action Painting, and landscape and still life genres.

His art was not mere ‘citationism’ or the desire to reinterpret the art of the past but is about the appropriation and transformation in a Pop way of forms of Greek architecture, Etruscan painting and the Baroque line.

The exhibition proposes a major re-reading of the following: Impressionism and expressionism, with their main exponents such as Monet, Matisse, and Nolde; Cubism with Picasso; Futurism; the Rationalism of Mondrian; and Surrealism.

The historic avant-garde movements in particular, which gave life to a new artistic course through a break with the past and which are now assimilated into ‘great art’, were in turn transformed to become an object of ironic and destabilising inquiry highlighting the cultural commercialisation and exploitation of high art.

One of the most complete monographs of the artist to date, this volume depicts the career of Roy Lichtenstein, one of the finest American pop artists of his era. Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was the master of the stereotype, and the most sophisticated of the major pop artists. An emblematic protagonist of the New York art scene of the second half of twentieth century, he became a legend in his prolific lifetime. Even now, thirteen years after his death, his works and lexicon of symbols, subjects and themes continue to intrigue the art world. Published on the occasion of the major exhibition at the Milan Triennial, this monograph covers the entire artistic development of Roy Lichtenstein, through more than 250 paintings and sculptural works, a rich photographic section including unpublished material, and critical text. The reproductions of Lichtenstein’s work are large-format, in full color. The insightful quotes and most of the references to his personal life serve to explain how his art evolved or how he came to be in a particular place in the world. This deluxe edition (large square format with padded cover) offers a dynamic and provocative look at the works of Lichtenstein through a powerful combination of text and visual elements. It will appeal to Lichtenstein fans, critics, dealers, and anyone interested in contemporary art.

The seminal surrealist. Exploring Dalí's grandiose and grotesque oeuvre

Picasso called Dalí "an outboard motor that’s always running." Dalí thought himself a genius with a right to indulge in whatever lunacy popped into his head. Painter, sculptor, writer, and filmmaker, Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was one of the century’s greatest exhibitionists and eccentrics — and was rewarded with fierce controversy wherever he went. He was one of the first to apply the insights of Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis to the art of painting, approaching the subconscious with extraordinary sensitivity and imagination.

This publication presents the entire painted oeuvre of Salvador Dalí. After many years of research, Robert Descharnes and Gilles Néret finally located all the paintings of this highly prolific artist. Many of the works had been inaccessible for years— in fact so many that almost half the illustrations in this book had rarely been seen.

About the authors:

Robert Descharnes, a photographer and writer, has published studies of major artists, among them Antoni Gaudí and Auguste Rodin. Since 1950, he has been documenting and cataloguing Dalí's paintings and writings and is now considered the leading expert on the artist.

Gilles Néret (1933–2005) was an art historian, journalist, writer and museum correspondent. He organized several art retrospectives in Japan and founded the SEIBU museum and the Wildenstein Gallery in Tokyo. He directed art reviews such as L'Œil and Connaissance des Arts and received the Elie Faure Prize in 1981 for his publications. His TASCHEN titles include Salvador Dalí: The Paintings, Matisse, and Erotica Universalis.

Best known for his barbed and brilliant art for the New Yorker, Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) did much more. He executed public murals, designed fabrics and stage sets, was an inventive collagist and printmaker, and turned his magic touch to the fields of painting, sculpture, advertising, and even wartime propaganda.

This is the first comprehensive look at Steinberg's extraordinary contribution to twentieth-century art, which was that of a modern-day illuminator, putting word and image in play to create art that spoke to the eyes, and minds, of readers. An introduction by poet Charles Simic tracks the origins of Steinberg's darkly comic sensibility in the 'Balkan bazaar' of his native Romania. Joel Smith shows how architectural training and an early rise to fame as a cartoonist in Fascist-era Milan honed the artist's gift for subtle graphic invention, and explores why one of the most visible, prolific, potent, and cosmopolitan careers in postwar American art has so thoroughly evaded serious study.

Tracing the evolving motives that underlie Steinberg's multi-layered activity, this handsome volume also raises fundamental questions about the historiography of modernism and the vexed status of 'the middlebrow avant-garde' in an age of museum-bound art.

Previously unseen sketches, documents, and printed matter from the artist's papers illustrate the essay, career chronology, and entries for 120 objects featured in this important book.

Vienna's controversial prodigy

Expressive nudes, strange movements

Egon Schiele (1890-1918) is the painter who had the most long-lasting influence on the Vienna art scene after the great era of Klimt came to a close. After a short flirtation with the style of Klimt, his mentor, Schiele soon questioned the aesthetic orientation to the beautiful surface of the Viennese Art Nouveau with his rough and not easily accessible paintings.

Many contemporaries found Schiele's expressive nudes and self-portraits, with their strange movements and morbid colours, to be ugly and even morally objectionable - criticism which culminated in criminalizing the painter as 'obscene' and resulted in 1912 in an indictment and short jail sentence. However, not even his harshest critics could dispute the artist's extraordinary drawing talent. This book gives a concise overview of the brief, brilliant career of Egon Schiele.

Hajime Sorayama

The Japanese artist Sorayama is a global phenomenon and has the reputation of being an enfant terrible. At last, there is a new and considerably expanded edition of his COMPLETE MASTERWORKS in enhanced print quality and at a very reasonable price.

This thick tome is a reference catalogue to Sorayama’s rich work including a lot of new illustrations. Printed in high-density and best possible quality his MASTERWORKS sparkle with extraordinary talent, wondrous imagination and impeccable skill. Enjoy!
READERS' VIEWS:
"Sorayama’s surreal and futuristic DADAIST images not only produce incredible sensations in the observer but also blend into a unique homage to life. With joyful freedom, he combines and morphs fear with happiness, pain with pleasure, repulsion with attraction, past with future, flesh with metal, the organic with ethereal. Stronger than any constraint, the energy of life and love that goes through his work is what I admire most in his amazingly perfect technique." Thierry Mugler

"Sorayama is blessed with extraordinary talent, a wonderful imagination and peerless skill."Bob Guccione (Penthouse)

"Many up-and-coming artists in the world of airbrushing regard Sorayama as their godfather. One reason is doubtless the fact that his various bright, shiny, sexy robots and pin-ups, for which he has a predilection, have been done so perfectly, that people mistakenly presume his most important tool is the airbrush. In fact, an ordinary paintbrush is what he mainly uses. A misunderstanding one can easily live with..." Arno Welke

"Sorayama is, without doubt, the number one in the world of erotic illustration!”Peter W. Czernich (Marquis)
Lesermeinung:
"Sorayama’s surreal and futuristic DADAIST images not only produce incredible sensations in the observer but also blend into a unique homage to life.

Arno Welke

Stelios Faitakis
ID: 13918
Видавництво: Gestalten

The distinctive and technically outstanding visual language of the paintings of young Greek artist Stelios Faitakis skillfully combines the depiction of modern subjects with the influence of Byzantine, Russian, and Eastern iconic painting. The trademarks of his work are the intensive use of the color gold and images of halos, which were prevalent in medieval painting styles. Faitakis´s perspectives are unsettling, his content provocative. Referencing numerous styles, his images juxtapose Medusa-headed giraffes with skateboarders riding waves of destruction or religious martyrs and bizarre gangsters with suffering lovers. Violence and death often lay siege to his landscapes. Stelios Faitakis, who currently lives in Athens and has been painting since he was a child, builds worlds out of his images just as masterfully as he breaks them down again. The richness of detail in his work can be seen in the context of Pieter Bruegel and Mexican mural art. His powerful figurative technique takes installation to a new level that shows how criticism of current social conditions can be combined with timeless spiritual intensity in innovative ways. Faitakis has exhibited his work in numerous successful shows around the world. Most notably, his large scale mural paintings are receiving international accolades at the 2011 Venice Biennale, where they are gracing the façade of the Danish pavilion. Hell on Earth is Stelios Faitakis´s first comprehensive monograph. Texts by curators Katerina Gregos and Nadja Argyropoulou contextualize his apocalyptical work.

Emotional intelligence. A synthesis of form and feeling

First applied to the poems of Stéphane Mallarmé and Paul Verlaine in 1886, the term symbolist was soon applied to the visual arts where a realistic depiction of the natural world gave way to imaginary dream scenes of psychological, sexual, and mystical content.

Symbolism was a broad international phenomenon but particularly present in France, where painters such as Gustave Moreau and Odilon Redon turned their backs on realism, naturalism, and impressionism to populate their canvases with esoteric, often erotic, visions. In place of Monet s light-suffused landscapes or the frank working-class subjects of Courbet, the Symbolists turned to figures from literature, the Bible, and Greek mythology to express experiences of love, fear, anguish, death, sexual awakening, and unrequited desire.

With featured work from Edward Burne-Jones, Puvis de Chavannes, Gustav Klimt, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Gustave Moreau, Odilon Redon and many more, this book introduces Symbolism s great reach, intensity, and influence.

This exhibition is the first solo presentation and one of the most important to be held in Europe on the work of the Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral (Capivari, São Paolo,1886-1973), a key figure in Brazilian painting and responsible for the introduction of the European avant-garde into that country. The exhibition has been devised and organised by the Fundación Juan March and is co-produced with the Fundación Caixa Galicia. The exhibition focuses on the work of the artist s dazzling middle period in the 1920s, when she lived between São Paolo and Paris, with a symbolic conclusion in Moscow (where she travelled in 1931). It emphasises her connections with the avant-garde in Paris, her training with painters such as André Lhote and Fernand Léger, and her friendship with some of the French avant-garde poets, in particular Blaise Cendrars. The exhibition comprises 50 paintings and drawings, most of them on loan from Brazilian museums and private collections, with the exception of three works from the Musée de Grenoble, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. It also features an introductory room that sets the artist in her context and offers an overview of the Brazilian art scene in the 1920s with works by some of the most important figures in modern Brazilian art as well as documentary material.

Under the rule of Henry VII (r. 1485-1509) England became a powerful nation. The Tudor court sought to express its worldliness and political clout through major artistic commissions, employing Florentine sculptors and painters to create lavish new interiors, suitable for entertaining foreign dignitaries, for its royal palaces. These were exemplified by Henry VIII's palace of Nonsuch, so named because no other palace could match its magnificence. Italian sculpture, painting, and tapestries of the day reflected an interest in portraiture and dynastic monuments, epitomized in England by the royal tomb projects created by Baccio Bandinelli, Benedetto da Rovezzano, and Pietro Torrigiani.

Generously illustrated throughout, The Anglo-Florentine Renaissance traces the artistic links between Medicean Florence and Tudor England through essays by an international team of scholars and explores how the language of Florentine art effectively expressed England's political aspirations and rose to prominence as a new international courtly style.

Walter Crane, Jeff A. Menges
ID: 8182
Видавництво: Dover

A prominent figure in the Victorian art world, Walter Crane not only participated in the late nineteenth century's publishing revolution but also led the way toward the Golden Age of Illustration. Crane was instrumental in the transition from simple black-and-white illustrations for children's books to gallery-quality artwork. This original collection features more than one hundred of the influential artist's brilliant images. It constitutes a survey of his paintings as well as a visual history of the development of the first color illustrations.
Few artists of Crane's generation achieved careers as varied and successful as his. This compilation reflects the diversity of his subjects, from images for alphabet books, nursery rhymes, and fairy tales to scenes from stories of King Arthur and Robin Hood to illustrations inspired by the classics of Shakespeare, Hawthorne, and Spenser. Editor Jeff A. Menges provides an Introduction that places the artist and his works in historic context.

Arthur Symons

Видавництво: Art/Books

English illustrator and author Aubrey Beardsley (1872–98) was a leading figure of the Aesthetic Movement and the most controversial artist of the 1890s. His delicate yet bold drawings in black ink of grotesque, sensual and erotic subjects transformed the art of illustration but also scandalized Victorian society with their dark and often perverse imagery. Prolific until his young death at the age of twenty-five from tuberculosis, he produced an enormous body of work that symbolized the decadence of the period and had a substantial and lasting effect on the Art Nouveau and poster movements.

Published twenty years after he died, The Art of Aubrey Beardsley presented some sixty of his most significant works in an intimate pocket volume. With a personal memoir and critical appreciation by Beardsley’s collaborator the poet and magazine editor Arthur Symons written upon the artist’s death, the book soon became the definitive word on the provocative artist’s seductive and individual art. This centenary facsimile edition faithfully reproduces the pages of the original 1918 volume while presenting them in a beautifully designed, high-quality clothbound format that will appeal to a contemporary audience. A perfect gift for any Beardsley enthusiast, this book will also appeal to anyone interested in the fin-de-siècle era and the beginnings of modern graphic art.
