Jacques Lipchitz is one of the master sculptors of the 20th century, an artist whose oeuvre spans more than six decades and numerous artistic movements including Cubism and Surrealism. The first volume of the complete catalogue raisonné of his work, covering the period between Lipchitz’s arrival in Paris in 1909 and his departure to the United States in 1941, was published by Thames & Hudson in 1996.
The second volume of the catalogue raisonné documents all the known works from Lipchitz’s arrival in New York in 1941 until his death in 1973. Lipchitz’s sculptures from the American years are characterized by a new spirit of optimism, dynamic gestures and a powerful illusion of movement. They include Arrival (1941), which sums up the feelings Lipchitz had on finding sanctuary from fascism in the United States, and the brilliantly innovative ‘transparents’ of the 1940s.
Together, these two volumes provide an essential work of reference for art historians.

Netsuke, the Japanese male belt ornaments of outstanding craftsmanship, aroused much interest in the Western world already in the late 19th century. They appeal by their variety of shapes and the sheer endless number of motifs and still continue to fascinate a wide audience; they have become coveted collectors’ items worldwide, as the most recent auction results emphatically show.
The attraction of netsuke lies in the expressive power achieved within a small space and the masterly execution in the most varied materials, such as wood, ivory and horn. The subjects illustrate almost all aspects of Japanese culture: Buddhist figures, gods of good luck, animals, plants, fruit and flowers, literary characters, foreigners, children, masks and occupations, down to the prosaic paraphernalia of everyday life. One of the world’s most comprehensive netsuke collections is the Werdelmann Collection at the museum kunst palast Düsseldorf with its almost 1100 objects, the result of more than thirty-five years of committed collecting. The exhibition presents a unique survey of this art form from the 17th to the 20th century.
All 1070 objects are reproduced in brilliant colour photographs and described according to the most recent scholarly research. Очень актуальный для России сегодня проект, хоть и задуман был лет пять назад. Целая россыпь выкрашенных ослепительно белой эмалью бронзовых скульптур разных размеров представлена в виде инсталляции в пространстве затянутого черным бархатом и специально освещенного зала. Традиционные обитатели лексиконов и азбук Брускина усилены на этот раз целым отрядом отвратительных существ, напоминающих о чудовищных бестиариях средневековья, о Босхе, сюрреалистических монстрах и гибридах братьев Чепмен. Ювелирная тонкость исполнения, подчеркивающая все жирные складки, скелетоподобные тела и длинные хвосты, только усиливает впечатление. Конечно, это метафоры, олицетворяющие образ врага «во всех его ипостасях: враждебное государство, классовый враг, враг подсознания, “другое”, “неизвестное” как враг. Время, Кронос, Смерть в качестве врагов, Враг рода человеческого...»
