Recognised as one of the leading artists of his generation, Marc Quinn is not easily reduced to convenient labels. The most comprehensive book on Quinn to date, Self, You, and the World traces the artist’s three-decades-long fascination with the multifaceted experience of being human.

Marc Quinn came to international attention in 1991 with Self, a cast of his head made from his own frozen blood. His early explorations of the self would soon broaden to wider reflections on the experiences of others. Prominent in this shift was his acclaimed 2005 sculpture Alison Lapper Pregnant, exhibited on the Fourth Plinth of London’s Trafalgar Square. Quinn has since engaged with a number of urgent social and environmental issues through diverse materials and techniques that frequently animate connections between art and science, wrestling with the dichotomies of beauty and ugliness, the physical and the spiritual, the eternal and the mortal. This seminal overview features many of his most celebrated works alongside conversations with past sitters and fellow thinkers Ai Weiwei, Titus Kaphar, Alison Lapper, Kate Moss, Nella Ngingo, and Jen Reid, painting a picture of an artist insatiably curious about the world that surrounds him.

Jefferson Hack is a curator, creative director, and co-founder of Dazed Media.

Casts new light on 75 masterpieces of modern art, revealing details that even those familiar with the works may previously have missed

Great works of art cannot be fully understood in a single encounter: to get the most out of modern art, it pays to revisit and reconsider, to reflect and to scrutinize in detail. It is also helpful to understand a work’s context: what has gone before, what it may be reacting against or extending, how it embraces new technologies, and how it relates to contemporary thinking on such subjects as politics, sexuality, identity and the role of the artist.

Modern Art in Detail: 75 Masterpieces spotlights the finer points that even those in the know may miss, casting light upon minutiae that a quick glance will almost certainly fail to reveal. Expert commentary reveals the subtle internal details and technical tricks employed by the artist to achieve particular effects.

The book also looks at the themes and external and personal factors influencing the creation of an artwork – everything from global political events, to groundbreaking movements such as Cubism, Abstract Expressionism and Pop, and even scientific and mathematical theories, which are often of great relevance.

The book examines 75 works of modern art, from Vincent van Gogh’s The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise, through Marcel Duchamp’s The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even and Francis Bacon’s Three Studies for a Crucifixion, to Jeff Koons’s Triple Elvis and Theaster Gates’s Face Over Time.

Approaching each work as part of a tradition that links the oldest work of art to the most recent, it deftly charts the shift from the supremacy of artistic technique to the more recent dominance of the idea behind the artwork itself, as well as being an enlightening, entertaining and accessible guide to a wide range of modern art.

About the Author:

Susie Hodge is an art historian, author, artist and journalist with more than 100 books to her name. She has an MA in the History of Art from Birkbeck, University of London, and is a Fellow of the RSA. She has twice been named the No. 1 art writer by the Independent.

Written by Takashi Murakami, Contribution by Massimiliano Gioni
ID: 12542
Видавництво: Rizzoli

A comprehensive volume — overseen by the artist himself — on one of the most renowned living artists today, Takashi Murakami.

Takashi Murakami is celebrated the world over for his deft blurring of high and low art. In this volume, accompanying a major exhibition of his work and the first in the Middle East, readers are immersed in the unique way Murakami channels the ecstasy and anxiety of contemporary culture. Conceived by the artist as a self-portrait in the guise of a cartoon, Murakami – Ego illuminates the role of the artist as a cipher and critic of pop phenomena as well as a mirror of global networks of consumerism, interpretation, and exchange.

The book features some of the artist’s most celebrated series, including Kaikai Kiki Lots of Faces and Pom and Me. Murakami has conceived of the exhibition itself as a work of art, creating new modes of display that include sculptural pedestals with digital animation, a circus tent that doubles as an indoor cinema, and an impressive 300-foot-long painting, all of which are featured in the book. In addition to an interview by curator Massimiliano Gioni, Murakami will contribute writings on various works.

About the Author:

Takashi Murakami has become recognized as one of the most prominent contemporary artists of his time. His work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions at museums and art institutions throughout the world. Recent shows include the travelling retrospective ©MURAKAMI and the Château de Versailles’s solo exhibition of his works on the palace grounds. Massimiliano Gioni is the associate director and director of exhibitions for the New Museum in New York and the curator of the exhibition Murakami – Ego for the Qatar Museums Authority.

Text by John Hanhardt and Gregory Zinman
ID: 15788
Видавництво: Rizzoli

Surveying the work of video art pioneer Nam June Paik, this volume highlights the artist's radical engagement with process.

Nam June Paik (1932–2006) broke new ground in late twentieth-century art, working on a global stage to transform video into an art medium. This book reflects on Paik’s working method as well as the ideas and materials that inspired his art practice. It was published on the occasion of a two-part exhibition at Gagosian, New York, curated by John G. Hanhardt, one of the foremost scholars of Paik’s work. Nam June Paik: Art in Process highlights the centrality of process and exploration across Paik’s career — through his pioneering manipulated televisions from the early 1960s to live global satellite telecasts, large-scale video sculptures, drawings, and the late-style painted TVs — and provides an opportunity to follow Paik’s lifelong engagement with new media and the development of his own singular visual language. Highlights include Paik’s painted sections of the Berlin Wall (2005); Beuys Projection (1990), Paik’s powerful video interpretation of his performance with Joseph Beuys in Tokyo; and his celebrated One Candle, Candle Projection (1988–2000), a live video installation of candlelight.

With essays by John G. Hanhardt and Gregory Zinman, the book features extensive illustrations including numerous full-page plates and details, a foldout of the score for Paik’s Symphony for 20 Rooms (1961), as well as rarely seen archival photographs by Peter Moore (1932–1993) documenting Paik’s early performances.

About the Author:

John G. Hanhardt is an art historian and a curator of film and the media arts. He has curated retrospectives of Nam June Paik’s work at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Smithsonian American Art Museum. Gregory Zinman is Associate Professor of Film and Media in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is the author of Making Images Move: Handmade Cinema and the Other Arts, and is a coeditor, with John Hanhardt and Edith Decker-Phillips, of We Are in Open Circuits: Writings by Nam June Paik.

Nick Waplington, with an introduction by Simon Baker
ID: 16795
Видавництво: Phaidon

An expansive and timely survey on contemporary British photographer and artist Nick Waplington, with work spanning his entire 40-year career – his first comprehensive retrospective volume

London- and New York-based artist Nick Waplington uses photography to capture the complex and far-reaching aspects of our lived experience. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s with Living Room and has since become known for his unfiltered depictions of people and places, and the sociopolitical backgrounds that define them.

From the chaos, violence, and euphoria of riots, protests, and free parties to the surreal, hypnotic quiet of his large-format landscapes, Waplington’s work (in all its messy humanness) transcends stereotypes and confounds expectations, and this book is no exception. Including never-before-published images, offering new insight into both well- and lesser-known projects, as well as Waplington’s painting and artistic practice, the book opens with a newly commissioned introduction from Simon Baker, one of the leading curators of contemporary photography in Europe and director of the Maison Européenne de la photographie (MEP), Paris.

This is the most extensive survey of Waplington's work to date, and includes previously unpublished photographs, as well as paintings, sketchbooks, and other artworks that complement his practice.

About the Authors:

Nick Waplington is a British artist living between London and New York. He has published extensively throughout his career, including Safety in Numbers (1995), Truth or Consequences (Phaidon, 2001), Working Process (2013), a collaboration with Alexander McQueen, Hackney Riviera (2019), and Anaglypta (2020). Waplington has exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, and in 2015, was the first living British artist to have a solo photographic exhibition in the main galleries of Tate Britain, London.

Simon Baker is a curator, writer, and educator, and is currently director of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris. Formerly, he was senior curator of international art at the Tate Modern, London

The Many Facets of Niki de Saint Phalle

Niki de Saint Phalle loved pseudo-orders, which she used to arbitrarily assemble terms and pictograms on a sheet of paper. Under the heading “I Love,” for example, the sign of a snake could be found next to the emblem for justice, an orange spot for the corresponding color next to two stars as a symbol for astrology. Niki de Saint Phalle A–Z takes the same liberty and puts the many facets of Niki de Saint Phalle’s work into the order of the alphabet. This logical order is deceptive, though. From A as in AIDS to Z as in Zurich Angel, from B as in Bride to V as in Vanitas, a mosaic of concepts emerges that filters out the various levels of meaning in her manifold oeuvre and playfully engages them in mutual commentary.

Niki de Saint Phalle (1930–2002) was one of the most important artists and sculptors of her generation. Growing up in Paris and New York, she returned to Paris in the 1950s, where she began her artistic career with her legendary “shooting” series. Her sensual female figures, the Nanas, gained her widespread popularity.

About the Author:

Art scholar Katharina Sykora (*1955) was a professor at the University of Bochum and Braunschweig University of Art from 1994 to 2018. Her fields of research include the construction of authorship, gender and transmediality.

A kaleidoscopic overview of the influential artist and art director, cataloging thirty years of his work and his quest through the world of imagery.

The Art of Transformation

Using her own body as raw material for her artistic practice, French artist Orlan deconstructs the traditional iconography of the feminine. In the 1990s, ORLAN caused a sensation with surgical operations performed on her body, but it was as early as 1964, at the age of 17, that she gave birth to her artistic self. Since then, she has continuously recreated herself and keenly explored the concept of identity. In her “carnal art,” the body becomes both subject and object. This publication traverses the six decades of Orlan’s oeuvre, revisiting her early performances in particular. One of her most recent creations is the ORLAN-OÏDE robot, and thanks to an augmented reality app, Orlan avatars come to life and emerge from this richly illustrated volume. The political status of the body is made evident through all of her works: in 1989 she transformed Gustave Courbet’s famous painting L’origine du monde into L’origine de la guerre by replacing the vulva with the phallus. The statement has not lost any of its topicality.

About the Author:

Orlan (*1947, Saint-Étienne) is one of the most noteable representatives of the feminist avant-garde and performance art as well as the founder of L'Art Charnel (carnal art). The French artist has been using her own body as artistic material for six decades. She lives and works in Paris.
