A homage to the great Spanish painter of light and sea, among the innovators of Spanish painting, drawing from the Impressionist experience

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (Valencia, 1863 – Cercedilla, 1923) was one of the major Spanish painters at the turn of the 19th century; his paintings exude light, and appear modern and photographic-like, capturing dynamic moments of gentle and subtle realism, capable of staging the contemporary, without commenting it.

An authentic visual poetry presenting a marine rural Spain rooted in tradition; an artistic style relevantly set between Goya and Picasso, marking a crucial milestone in the course of Spanish and European painting. The main subject of the Spanish painter’s art however was always the Mediterranean light, that the artist masterfully captured on his canvases with vibrant, light, bright palettes and pure dazzling whites; his extraordinary works en plein air by the sea make Sorolla an exponent of an accomplished Mediterranean impressionism.

One of the most important contemporary painters to emerge from Latin America, Julio Larraz (b. 1944, Havana) creates powerful, dreamlike paintings that reflect the influence of painters from Velázquez to Sargent and Hopper, and Surrealist artists like Dalí and Magritte. A unique visionary, Larraz produces work that has been described by some as mind-bending and playful, using a refreshingly wide range of subjects from still life to Cuban cultural imagery, such as bullfights, men in white linen suits, and maritime scenes. He reveals imaginary worlds, with deeply satirical, ambiguous, and multilayered themes, in which he often alludes to political corruption, class structure, and human foibles.

This is the largest and most comprehensive book to date, with 200 paintings, 50 works on paper, and 10 sculptures, ranging from the 1960s to the present, accompanied by an essay by David Ebony that situates Larraz’s work within the Latin American painting tradition.

Key tenets included the connections between painting, music and mystical experience, and the purification of art away from material realism and towards an emotional expression, condensed in particular by color.

The author

Hajo Düchting studied art history, philosophy, and archaeology in Munich, where he gained his doctorate in 1981 with a thesis on Robert Delaunay’s Windows series. After working in museum and adult education, he moved on to teaching posts and guest professorships at the universities of Munich, Kassel, Leipzig, Saarbrücken, and Mainz. Düchting has published numerous articles on the art of the modern era, color theory, and the teaching of art, and has authored a number of TASCHEN titles, including Paul Cézanne, Wassily Kandinsky, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, and Georges Seurat.

Gold, flowers, and female beauty. The work of the decadent Austrian symbolist

The unfading popularity of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) attests not only to the particular appeal of his luxuriant painting but also to the universal themes with which he worked: love, feminine beauty, ageing, and death.

American painter Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) pioneered a new epoch in American art, bursting onto a scene dominated by Abstract Expressionism in late 1950s New York and defining a new art vocabulary for a new era.

Painter Prince of the Renaissance

Lucas Cranach the Elder created around 500 works during his lifetime. With his portraits of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchton and as court painter to Frederick the Wise, he became one of the most sought-after painters of the Reformation. At the same time, Cranach was the first to translate the Italian Renaissance tradition of the life-size nude into art north of the Alps; his lascivious, barely veiled depiction of Venus, the goddess of love, bears witness to this. On the occasion of the large Cranach exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Austrian writer Teresa Präauer explores the work of this busy prince of painters from A to Z. She focuses not only on Cranach's art, but also on the society that surrounded him, the subjects he painted, and the events that shaped his development.

Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472–1553) was one of the most prolific painters, graphic artists and letterpress printers of the German Renaissance. Court painter at the court of the Elector of Saxony since 1505, he devoted himself not only to religious works but also to mythological themes and numerous portraits.

The writer  Teresa Präauer (*1979) studied German literature in Salzburg and Berlin as well as art at Mozarteum Salzburg. She writes novels, essays, and columns. In her tragic-comical artist novel Johnny und Jean (Wallstein, 2016), the painter Cranach played a crucial role.

Lucian Freud (1922–2011) was one of the greatest figurative painters of the twentieth century. With an unflinching eye and an uncompromising commitment to his work, he created masterpieces that continue to inspire contemporary artists to the present day.

About Color. August Macke’s vivid shades still resonate a century after his death

August Macke is today considered a lead figure in Weimar-era art and a pioneer of Expressionist painting. With his color-led interpretations of beauty, Macke combined facets of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Fauvism into a style at once kaleidoscopic and uniquely his own. From cheerful scenes of parks to his final major work Farewell, discover the life of “Mister Color.”

August Macke (1887–1914) quickly ascended to notoriety, only to be killed at the tender age of 27 at the start of World War I. Despite his brief career, the artist left a remarkable oeuvre in his wake, his obsessions with color reflecting aspects of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, and Expressionism.

Through his engagement with these diverse schools of art, Macke assimilated disparate influences and approaches into a style entirely his own. Grouped with the Blaue Reiter movement, but eschewing the mysticism that often pervaded the works of its artists, Macke returned time and again to color-led interpretations of beauty, whether the kaleidoscopic watercolor Bright Women in front of the Hat Shop (1913), or the shimmering hues of Lady in a Green Jacket (1913). These colors reached their zenith in 1914 when Macke traveled with Klee and Moilliet to Tunis and became acquainted with North African light.

With leading examples from his vivid painterly world, this book introduces us to Macke’s short but influential career as a pioneering Expressionist. From cheerful scenes of parks, zoos, and promenades to his final major work, ominously titled Farewell (1914), we explore a remarkable talent for visual impact and an intense pursuit of the emotional possibilities of color.

The author:

Anna Meseure, born in Hamme, Belgium, studied interior design at the NHIBS of the University of Antwerp, as well as art history, history and German philology at the University of Stuttgart. She received her doctorate in 1982 for a work on the history of the Antwerp stock exchange and 19th-century European stock-exchange architecture. From 1982 to 1990 she was an assistant at the Museum Ostwall in Dortmund, then she worked at the Deutsche Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt am Main until 2002. Meseure has published numerous works on art and architecture. Today she lives and works as a freelance art historian in Frankfurt am Main.
