Jean Nouvel, the winner of the 2008 Pritzker Prize, is widely regarded as France’s most original and important contemporary architect. From 1967 to 1970 he assisted influential architects Claude Parent and Paul Virilio, before creating his own practice in Paris. His first widely acclaimed project was the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (1981–87). Since then he has completed the Lyon Opera House and the Fondation Cartier, Paris.

His major completed projects since 2000 include the Culture and Convention Center in Lucerne, Switzerland, the spectacular Agbar Tower in Barcelona, the Quai Branly Museum in Paris, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the Hotel Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom with shopping mall. Jean Nouvel was the 2001 recipient of the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture. In his citation, Peter Cook said of Nouvel: "In an age of blandness, imitation, or doubt, his work shines through as having both clarity and finesse, originality and lyricism."

Tadao Ando is one of the best-known and most influential architects of the contemporary age. His work is unmistakably spiritual, even for a nonbeliever. Heavily influenced by Japanese traditions and primarily interested in using concrete as a building material, Ando leverages simplicity in order to make it easy for people to experience the spirit and beauty of nature, leaving out ornament in favor of emphasizing the buildings’ surroundings and embeddedness with the natural world. To Ando, sunlight, wind, and rain are expressions of the natural world, and geometry is also part of the underlying reality of life.

The Church of the Light is marked only by a cruciform opening that leaves the spectator to contemplate the qualities of form, light, and space. At the Water Temple, an elliptical lotus pond appears behind a curved wall, and a narrow flight of stairs in the middle of the pond leads down to the inner sanctum. As Ando writes in his preface, the book reflects his lifelong study of spaces for worship, where people gather, and it represents a special period in his life where he has become more focused on his spiritual work.

McClean is a member of the American Institute of Architects and works primarily in California and Hawaii. 

Philip Jodidio was born in New Jersey in 1954. He studied art history and economics at Harvard before moving to Paris, where he was editor-in-chief of the French art monthly Connaissance des Arts from 1980 to 2002. Jodidio has written over 90 books about contemporary architecture and art, including Tadao Ando: Venice, Tadao Ando at Naoshima, Tadao Ando Modern Art Museum of Ft. Worth, and I. M. West Kowloon Station enjoys a spectacular location with a panoramic view of the Hong Kong skyline, but when Bromberg's team entered the competition to design it, they encountered a problem the station is mostly 100 feet belowground. His solution was to ensure the station was civic-minded and to create a large volume capped by a shell-like dome that rises from the earth, capturing daylight and sending it deep underground. Even as they stand on the subterranean concourse, passengers can catch a glimpse of Victoria Peak and the city's tallest buildings. In order to keep the space open and airy, Bromberg minimized the number of columns needed to support the vast atrium. His team devised a system that branches out, giving the organic appearance that complements the sweep of the station roof.

This book contains never-before-seen sketches, models, renderings, drawings, and all-new photography of the building as well as an interview with the architect.
