Bars and restaurants need to be assertive. Customers tend not to visit them to satisfy basic appetites for food or drink but for social opportunities. Their interiors need to occupy the imagination of their customers and to whet the appetite for a return visit. The design that gets the formula right will do as much to prolong the life of the business as the products on offer.

As this book demonstrates, the conventions and mechanics of eating and drinking influence how bars and restaurants are conceived in different regions of the world. Whatever the final result users are in sustained, intimate contact with the elements of the space they inhabit and detailing must be refined enough, and visually rich enough, to withstand prolonged scrutiny.

This book includes a wide range of international projects and for each one there is a descriptive text, colour photographs, floor plans, sections and construction and decorative details. A bonus CD-ROM contains all the drawings as printed in the book, in both EPS and DWG (generic CAD) formats.

Dating back several hundred years, the Japanese bento box is as integral a part of the country’s culinary identity as sushi. Today, a contemporary version of the bento box exists, inspired by the rampant popularity of movies, television shows and manga. These charaben, made by parents (mostly mothers) eager to bring attention to their children’s lunch boxes, comprise food crafted into visually creative, appealing and recognizable forms, and are as much about planning and preparation as nutrition.

What better way to make children eat than to turn their midday meals into cartoon characters and video games? With Face Food: The Visual Creativity of Japanese Bento Boxes, writer and designer Christopher D Salyers documents the very real phenomenon of how rice, seaweed, mushrooms, tofu, hot dogs, fish cakes and just about any other edible delight you can imagine are shaped into the likes of Pikachu, Daraemon and Cinderella, bringing health, heart and imagination to the bento box, not to mention a bit of one-upmanship. A brief how-to guide, ingredient lists and interviews with charaben enthusiasts illuminate the many dynamic reasons behind this wholly Japanese pursuit.

As Salyers writes: “There is something marvelous and enchanting in charaben, a something we should all look to find within ourselves - a convalescence of youth. For all of you who have ever eaten or prepared a slap-dash PB&J sandwich, or have been victim of school cafeterias, I offer up these pages as proof that when you show this much dedication to what you or your child eats, the end result will be nothing short of astounding.”

If you have never seen or tasted charaben, Face Food will open a whole new world to you, proving once again how the visual can say so much about a culture and its practices.

From the aspect of functional space, the book is divided into five parts: hotel space, business & office space, restaurant space, leisure & entertainment space and exhibition space. In the hotel space, this book selects hotels designed by well-known international design groups. You can comprehend the design classics of big groups through drawings of the hotel's public areas, lobby, banquet hall, rooms and so on. In the exhibition space, popular 2010 Shanghai World Expo pavilions are the main selection. The pomp of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo is recreated by displaying pavilion’s external shape, entrance and internal structure. In other spaces, you can learn about the building process of business environment by displaying functions of shopping malls, office decoration, stores, restaurants, KTV, leisure clubs and so on.
From the aspect of CAD drawings design, all selected drawings are domestic and international first-class drawings, and even built drawings. In addition, there are also corresponding real and effect maps. These drawings are very detailed and from big companies, including HBA, Gold Mantis, the United States Wilson, Tdi Associates (Shanghai) Pte, Ltd, and famous designers, including Gao Wenan, Xie Yingkai, Zhang Xing and so on. You can not only refer to their design but also quote something inside the drawings. For example, you can adjust the size of hardware structural elements to standard size for the next need; at the same time, it’s worth for you to collect some detailed and standard methods such as identification methods of icons, illustration, material and process. All these can enrich your own map storage or perfect your company’s storage.
