Renzo Piano rose to international prominence with his co-design of the Pompidou Center in Paris, described by The New York Times as a building that “turned the architecture world upside down.” Since then, he has continued to craft such iconic cultural spaces as the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago and, most recently, the Whitney Museum of American Art, an asymmetric nine-story structure in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District with both indoor and outdoor galleries. In London, the Piano touch has also transformed the skyline with the Shard, the tallest building in the European Union.

At the age of 81, the Italian maestro retains all of his enthusiasm and kindness — and his recent roster is more impressive than ever. As he confided to the author, “I think at a certain age, one can discover that there is what the French call the ‘fil rouge,’ a kind of red thread that relates one building to another over time. In my case, I believe it is about lightness and the art of building.” From freshly built museums in Athens and Santander; ongoing works in Los Angeles, Moscow, Beirut, and Istanbul; to such humanitarian projects as the Emergency Children’s Surgery Center in Entebbe, Uganda, and the Children’s Hospice in Bologna, Italy, Piano’s career is a thrilling journey through the beauty and very essence of architecture.

The artist:

Renzo Piano (born in 1937) studied at the University of Florence and at Milan’s Polytechnic Institute. A recipient of the RIBA Gold Medal in 1989 and the 1998 Pritzker Prize, Piano’s most iconic projects include the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Shard in London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He has his main offices in his native Genoa and in Paris.

The author:

Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. His TASCHEN books include the Architecture Now! series and monographs on Tadao Ando, Santiago Calatrava, Renzo Piano, Jean Nouvel, Shigeru Ban, Richard Meier, Zaha Hadid, and soon Norman Foster.

The aim of the collection is to offer a series of short monographs which, though brief, nevertheless deal with all aspects of the master's personality: works, constructed or otherwise, primary written sources, critiques and photographic interpretations. The underlying aim is to offer an in-depth, comprehensive overview targeted at anyone interested in learning about architecture including students, professionals or simply those who are interested in the subject, by providing not only basic information but also guidance in terms of gaining more insight into the subject.

Produced in collaboration with the Fondazione Piero Portaluppi, this new exhaustive monograph comprises a large photo album with new colour images of Portaluppi’s architectural projects and interiors, taken by the well-known photographer Ciro Frank Schiappa; three previously unpublished essays, illustrated with vintage photos by Antonio Paoletti; views and models of Portaluppi’s projects; items documenting his personal interests (cartoons, diagrams, sundials, postcards, newspaper cuttings). About the Authors:

Piero Maranghi, great-grandson of Piero Portaluppi, is director of the Fondazione Portaluppi.
Ciro Frank Schiappa (Dublin, 1971) studied photography at Fondazione Studio Marangoni in Florence, Italy. His photographs have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide

Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti (Джио Понти) (1891–1979) was the creator of a multifaceted oeuvre. Starting off with ceramics and majolika works at the First International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Monza, he moved on to furniture and interior design and built structures of all kinds, from small residential dwellings to high rise buildings, schools, and office blocks. One of his great interests was the theme of the home, for which he continually sought to find new solutions. Yasuhiro Yamashita/Atelier Tekuto

Born in Kagoshima Japan in 1960, Yasuhiro Yamashita has recognized by his architectures based on the system of society, the environment and the function. His void masonry works(Cell Brick, Crystal Brick) started to come into the spotlight at first and then he won various international architecture prizes by his genuine works, not fashionable. Besides last year, his ‘reflection of mineral" was selected in Wallpaper* Design Award. It is obvious fact that he is now one of competent architects in Japan. PA no.44 will provide a good chance to look through his special architecture works.
