Born and raised in Vienna, Richard Neutra (1872-1970) came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls, and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs, have the effect of connecting indoor and outdoor space. Neutra's ability to incorporate technology, aesthetics, science, and nature into his designs won him recognition as one of Modernist architecture's greatest talents.

About the Series:
Every book in TASCHEN's Basic Art Series features:

* a detailed chronological summary of the artist's life and work, covering the cultural and historical importance of the artist
* approximately 100 color illustrations with explanatory captions
* a concise biography

In the architecture of Richard Neutra (1892-1970), inside and outside find their perfect modernist harmony.

As the Californian sun glints off sleek building surfaces, vast glass panel walls allow panoramic views over mountains, gardens, palm trees, and pools. Neutra moved to the United States from his native Vienna in 1923 and settled in Los Angeles. He displayed his affinity with architectural settings early on with the Lovell House, set on a landscaped hill with views of the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Mountains. Later projects such as the Kaufmann House and Nesbitt House would continue this blend of art, landscape, and living comfort, with Neutra's clients often receiving detailed questionnaires to define their precise needs.

This richly illustrated architect introduction presents the defining projects of Neutra's career. As crisp structures nestle amid natural wonders, we celebrate a particularly holistic brand of modernism which incorporated the ragged lines and changing colours of nature as much as the pared-down geometries of the International Style.

About the series:

Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Architecture series features:
- an introduction to the life and work of the architect
- the major works in chronological order
- information about the clients, architectural preconditions as well as construction problems and resolutions
- a list of all the selected works and a map indicating the locations of the best and most famous buildings
- approximately 120 illustrations (photographs, sketches, drafts, and plans)

All of Richard Neutra's works gathered together in one volume

Originally from Vienna, Richard Neutra came to America early in his career, settling in California. His influence on post-war architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style.

Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. Neutra's ability to incorporate technology, aesthetic, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture.

For the first time, all of Neutra's works (nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings) are gathered together in one volume, illustrated by over 1000 photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers.

Young architects in the UK are making a name for themselves, not just because of the buildings they design, but also because of the ethos they share – one that embraces concern for the environment and makes a virtue of limited budgets. In New Arcadians, Lucy Bullivant profiles 18 cutting-edge UK-based practices, presenting recent key projects as well as interviews with the architects. The architects’ ecological awareness is evident in a wide range of schemes, from Nord’s Shingle House in Dungeness, Kent, which makes use of sustainable and recyclable materials, to GroundLab’s Flowing Gardens for the 2011 World Horticultural Expo at Xi’an, China, an inspiring example of urban regeneration. Other projects employ ecologically intelligent building materials or demonstrate a commitment to protecting and increasing biodiversity. Complete with an introduction exploring key trends in contemporary British architecture and full biographies of all the featured practices, New Arcadians is an exciting overview of the work and attitudes of a rising generation of UK architects who are reinvigorating the profession.

• Profiles the most dynamic and innovative new architectural practices in Britain today

The Asian boom of the last decade created an unprecedented arena for architectural adventure and experimentation, an environment in which Andrew Bromberg immersed himself and thrived. Aedas was at the epicenter of this ferment, in part due to its significant presence in Hong Kong preceding the boom, and then in large part due to the furious energy and passion that Bromberg brought to the firm when he joined in 2002.

New Architecture in the Emerging World chronicles the diverse range of projects designed by Andrew Bromberg for Aedas between 2002 and 2010. It highlights the exceptional design versatility and ingenuity Bromberg displayed in order to address Asia’s extremely varied clients, sites, architectural programmes, schedules and cultural parameters.

In tracing the intertwined fortunes of Bromberg, Aedas and the Asian continent at a time when the world’s economic centre of gravity appeared, at least for a while, to have permanently tilted to the east, New Architecture in the Emerging World provides an unparalleled survey of the phantasmagorical experience it turned out to be.

Based in the San Francisco Bay Area in California, the classically trained architects of John Malick and Associates draw from numerous historical styles, including English Arts and Crafts, Mediterranean, and Georgian Colonial. Each project reflects the spirit of a unique time and place, while also addressing current needs and budgets.

The projects featured in this monograph abandon the modern idiom and return to a time when buildings reflected noble achievements, pastoral visions, and sacred resonances. Through lush photography and engaging text, the reader is able to experience the sophistication of a Palladian neoclassical villa, the warmth of a Yorkshire cottage, and the sun-washed simplicity of a Mediterranean village nestled in the hills.

The design work of Marc Appleton's practise is a collaborative process with its clients, inspired by and responsive to their specific desires and needs. Frequently, it draws upon the time-honoured traditions of vernacular architecture, subtly reinterpreting them to evoke a presence of the past.

The firm strives to avoid a repetitiously personalized style and is committed to the idea that architecture is a craft rather than an art, a process rather than an object. Appleton agrees with fellow Californian architect William Wurster's view that architecture is for people, 'the picture frame, and not the picture'.

This collection of houses illustrates a splendid diversity of stylistic approaches and the range of creative possibilities. An obvious love of the traditions of architecture is evident in each one - no matter what the historical precedent or geographical location. The common language is decidedly Classical, yet American architect Ken Tate's personal interpretation and intellectual rigours allow each building to stand apart as an individual work of art - beautiful, livable and utterly engaging.

Now, for the first time, Images Publishing unveils the stunning portfolio of elegant estates and villas designed by the highly regarded but low profile West Coast architect. From English country houses to Italian villas and French chateaux, this beautifully illustrated new book reveals why this Los Angeles firm is regarded as the pre-eminent practitioner of classical architecture for the 21st century.

Richard M. Manion has been called “the David Adler of Los Angeles” by one of Architectural Digest’s Top 100 Designers.
