Peter Gisolfi is an architect, landscape architect and educator whose substantial design practice extends over 20 years. Most of his work consists of carefully crafted buildings that relate to a larger setting. A variety of public and private projects completed throughout the United States are featured in this first monograph. 

The projects in this book are organised thematically as landscapes and buildings, gardens and houses, campuses, townscapes, and transformations. The common threads in these projects are that indoor and outdoor spaces are created in harmony with each other, that buildings are placed to define outdoor spaces, and that natural context and man-made context strongly influence the design. Peter Pran is often acclaimed as one of the world's most innovative and creative architects. This Norwegian-American has won fifteen national and international design competitions, two AIA design honor awards, including the 2004 design honor award for the Telenor Headquarters, and twelve New York design awards and two American design awards. He has designed buildings in the USA, Canada, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America. Currently design principal for NBBJ, one of the world's largest international firms, his portfolio of work includes work with Mies van der Rohe on the new National Gallery in Berlin, the Chicago Federal Center and the Toronto Dominion Centre. Pran has also been senior project designer with SOM on several major projects.

Philippe Starck is one of the world's most prolific and famous designers. Well known for his luxurious hotels and restaurants, he is equally celebrated for his inspirational reworkings of everyday household items.

Whether it be his iconic lemon squeezer, dubbed the 'Juicy Salif', or his colourful stylized toothbrushes, Starck's works are some of the earliest examples of 'democratic design'. This idea, that exceptional products should not be exclusive and elite, but be accessible and affordable, would eventually revolutionise modern design.

Starck has worked privately for French president Francois Mitterand, decorating a suite in the Palais d'Élysée in Paris in 1982. He has designed products for a number of internationally renowned organisations including Microsoft, Lacie, Eurostar, Alessi and Fossil.

These volumes will introduce in a practical manner the personalities and the works of the world's major designers by way of an historical-critical introduction to the work and life of each individual designer. An accurate selection of the designer's most famous objects arranged in chronological order and a critique of his or her work summarising the most significant reviews published in magazines and newspapers will complete the subject.

Christina Morozzi is the editor of Design magazine and works as a curator of exhibitions in Italy and abroad. She is also a visiting professor at Domus Academy of Milan and University of Art and Design, Lausanne, Switzerland.

Renzo Piano (born in 1937) studied at the University of Florence and at Milan’s Polytechnic Institute. A recipient of the RIBA Gold Medal in 1989 and the 1998 Pritzker Prize, Piano’s most iconic projects include the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Shard in London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He has his main offices in his native Genoa and in Paris.

The author:

Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years.
